Women's Soccer Cruises Past Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team opened its 2023 season in dominant fashion with a 6-1 victory over the Morrisville State Mustangs on Friday night.

Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville) had a strong season debut with four points on one goal and two assists. Gabriela Daumont (Latham, NY/Shaker), Julianna Beaulieu (Southwick, MA/Chicopee Comprehensive), Kaela Mochak (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Mikayla Kelley (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) and Jazmyn Gillette (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) tallied one goal each as well. Gillette's score marked the first of her Pioneer career.

Utica outshot Morrisville 26-4 including 20-2 on goal. With strong defense aiding her, Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) earned the win with one save on her sheet over 64 minutes of play. Karen Troche (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) played the final 26 minutes and allowed just one goal.

Only 1:40 into the game, Kaela Mochak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) put Utica ahead with an assist from Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville) for a 1-0 lead. In the 24th minute, senior Gabriela Daumont (Latham, NY/Shaker) added another goal after she found the back of the net with an assist from Kayla Giovingo (Centereach, NY/Centereach). The Pioneers would go on to take their two goal lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Lamphere assisted on another goal, this time to Mikayla Kelley (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), to make the score 3-0. Less than two minutes later, Julianna Beaulieu (Southwick, MA/Chicopee Comprehensive) got on the score sheet for her first of the season. With a pair of assists already under her belt, Lamphere sent one into the back of the net herself for her first tally of the year to put Utica up 5-0.

In the 74th minute, Callie Lafontaine put Morrisville on the board to cut the lead to four, but Jazmyn Gillette (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) responded just 24 seconds later for her first collegiate goal to allow the Pioneers to regain their five goal edge and pull away with the road win.

Utica (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) will take a short trip to SUNY Poly at 6 p.m. on September 6.
