Last Time Out: To play off a familiar cinema phrase, there's no place quite like the dome for the Utica University track and field programs. The Utica University women certainly backed that up on Friday. The Pioneers saw two school records topple, plenty of updates to the program leaderboards were made and the squad stood atop the team standings with 168.5 points at the Utica Winter Opener held at the Todd and Jennifer Hutton Sports and Recreation Center. The Pioneers posted three national Top 50 marks, and won five events en route to victory. Freshman
Arianna McClendon (/New York Mills) was responsible for a pair of event wins in the 4x200 relay, and the 500 meters. She wrote her name into the school record books in the latter, going the two-and-a-half lap distance in 1:19.1 to win and secure the school record in that event. She bested her previous 500 meter time from the season opener by over two seconds. Her 4x200 relay team also featured
Alyssa Youngs (Constableville/West Canada Valley),
Claudia Simione (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon), and
Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden). Their winning time was 1:49.18.It was a celebration of the new, and also a celebration of one of the program's most well-established athletes by the time the night was over. Graduate student
Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) authored the finest indoor shot put performance of her career to take victory in Friday's meet. The local product obliterated her own school record with a new indoor personal best mark of 13.71 meters. That mark currently sits a terrific fourth nationally. She broke the record once before earlier in the night at 13.34 meters on her second throw. Freshman
Hannah Allison (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) and junior
Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) joined Fahy in setting national top 50 marks as they delivered terrific performances in the high jump. Both athletes cleared 1.57 meters to tie for the 31st-best mark in the nation so far this season. Allison was second, while Wadley was fourth with the tiebreakers in play. Their clearance is the third-best all time in the history of the program indoors. The horizontal jumps were a tremendous source of points for the Pioneers, led by
Nora Devitt's (Beverly, MA/Beverly) wins in the long jump (5.11 meters) and triple jump (10.92 meters) events. Utica swept the top six places in the triple jump with
Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello) (10.65 meters),
Sophia Bruce (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) (10.27 meters),
Nyasia Marsh (Westmoreland, NY/Westmoreland) (10.16 meters),
Alyssa Youngs (Constableville/West Canada Valley) (10.15 meters), and
Camdyn Cole (Cortland, NY/Homer) (9.76 meters) placing second through sixth, respectively. Bruce and Youngs both posted personal bests. In the long jump, Gholson followed Devitt in second place with a top performance of 5.05 meters.
Alyssa Youngs (Constableville/West Canada Valley) was fifth at 4.88 meters, while
Stefania Grimaldi (Poland, NY/Poland Central) was sixth at 4.81 meters on a day where she had two personal bests. Behind Fahy's shot put performance, a pair of younger athletes continued to make strides.
Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was third in that event with a best mark of 11.74 meters achieved on her sixth and final attempt, good for an AARTFC Qualifying Standard mark and the fifth-best individual performance in program history.
Riley King (Oswego, NY/Oswego) was eighth best all time in the program's 15 year history with a fourth place toss of 11.39 meters. King stood level with teammate
Hailey Hrouda (Wappingers Falls, NY/Royce Ketcham) in the weight throw with a best toss of 13.19 meters. Hrouda's performance was a personal best while standing in fifth position in Friday's competition, while King was sixth. A trio of promising freshmen delivered great results in the women's pole vault.
Cassondra Wood (Canasota, NY/Canasota),
Maizie Poulakis (Hamptons Bay, NY/Hamptons Bay), and
Jayle Leonard (Delancey, NY/Delaware Academy) all cleared 2.70 meters to place third, fourth, and fifth. Leonard's mark was the best of her collegiate career. Outside of McClendon's big day, the team's highest standing on-track performances happened in the 400 meters, 500 meters, and 60 hurdles. Mix and Simione placed third (1:03.52) and fifth (1:03.8) at 400 meters. Simione's fifth-place time was a personal best. At 500 meters, Janaiya Cruz Bermudez (1:23.32) and
Jade Dening (Remsen, NY/Remsen) (1:24.99) were fourth and fifth. It was Dening's first time contesting that event collegiately. In the 60 hurdles finals,
Stefania Grimaldi (Poland, NY/Poland Central) (10.35) placed fifth, and
Amelia Petersen (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) (11.21) placed seventh. Both athletes went quicker in the prelims, with their fourth-and-fifth fastest times of the prelims good enough to draw into the finals.
Nothing New Here: Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) having record-breaking performances has been a consistent sighting during her legendary career with the Pioneers. Fahy broke her own school record in shot put with a monster throw of 13.71m. This earned her Empire 8 Women's Field Athlete of the Week, and currently has her fourth in national rankings.
Get To Know Her: First-year
Arianna McClendon (/New York Mills) already took down a school record just three meets into her college career. Her record-breaking time in the 500m of 1:19.10 not only won her the event, but also earned her Women's Track Athlete of the Week. McClendon is regionally qualified in the 400m with a time of 1:00.03 and is ranked #36 nationally and #48 in the 200m (26.06).
Jump Squad: The women's team has had phenomenal performances in the jumping events so far this season. First-year Pioneers
Hannah Allison (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) and Abrianna Wadley had personal best high jumps of 1.57m at their last meet, qualifying them for regionals and currently ranked top 50 nationally. They are now tied for the #3 spot in program history in the event and are tied for the conference lead. The Utica women also have the top two conference spots in the triple jump.
Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) has the lead (11.45m), and
Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello) is the runner-up (11.12m). The freshman trio of
Sophia Bruce (Apalachin, NY/Vestal),
Nyasia Marsh (Westmoreland, NY/Westmoreland), and
Alyssa Youngs (Constableville/West Canada Valley) are also ranked six-seven-eight in that event.
Up Next: The Pioneers will return home for the Blue & Orange Invitational and Multi beginning on Friday, January 26 and continuing through January 27 at the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
