Baseball Falls to Minnesota Morris

DAVENPORT, FL - The Utica University baseball team was defeated by the Minnesota Morris Cougars 17-7 (7 innings) on Monday evening.

Antonio Martinez (Sunrise, FL/Western) finished with a pair of hits in the game including the team's lone extra-base hit of the game. Derek Holmes (Blossvale, NY/Camden), Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional), Jacob Scalise (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) and Max Gambitta (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each had one. Gambitta and Salbinski both finished with two RBI each as well.

On the mound, Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro), made the start and went 0.2 innings allowing four runs on four walks and a hit batter. Jonathan Rivera (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Central) picked up the loss going 2.2 innings with six runs allowed on eight hits and four walks. He also struck out three batters. Ben Freeman (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) tossed 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits and four walks while striking out a pair. Tim Martin (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls Lima) went a third of an inning and gave up one hit.

Backed by bases loaded walks, the Cougars hung up four runs on the Pioneers before the team could get up to the plate. However, the offense lit up the scoreboard as well in the home half with a six-spot.

All six runs came with two outs in the inning as Holmes brought home one on a base hit followed by a two-RBI Salbinski single. Later, a passed ball would even the score until Gambitta drove home a pair to go up 6-4 going into the 2nd.

A quiet 2nd for both teams led to the Cougars bringing home five in the 3rd, highlighted by a grand slam. Utica pieced one run together in the 3rd however, Minnesota Morris would go on to out-score the Pioneers 10-0 through the 7th inning to ultimately win via run rule.

Utica had four base runners over the final four innings whereas the Cougars' 10 runs over that span came on 11 hits and four free passes.
