Baseball Downed by Ohio Northern

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Utica University baseball team fell to the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, 13-5, at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) led the offense with a pair of hits over three trips to the dish. Nine other Pioneers totaled one hit as well. Runs were produced by Josh Duval (Utica, NY/Proctor), Antonio Martinez (Sunrise, FL/Western) and DaShawn Hutchinson (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Caden Congdon (Cortland, NY/Cortland) who each had one RBI.

Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) started the game and was credited with the loss after 2.1 innings and seven runs allowed on eight hits. Tim Martin (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls Lima) went 2.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. Justin Notargiacomo (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) threw the final three frames and allowed just two runs on six hits and a walk.

Following an empty 1st inning from both sides, the Polar Bears pieced together a four-run bottom of the 2nd. Three straight hits to open the inning brought home two runs before a one out single and a one out ground out scored the other two runs. ONU followed it up with three runs in the 3rd and another two in the 4th to go into the 5th up 9-0.

The Pioneers found the board in the away half of the frame on a Martinez RBI ground out. However, one run would be all for Utica in the 5th. ONU came back with two in the home half to lead 11-1.

Congdon drove home a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 6th while the Polar Bears answered back with one of their own in the bottom half. From there, Hutchinson singled home a run in the 7th while a Duval single and a wild pitch in the 8th plated two more to make it 12-5. However, ONU scored once more in the 8th before Utica went down in order in the 9th to close out the contest.

Utica (3-7, 0-0 Empire 8) will remain in Auburndale, FL on Wednesday to take on the University of Saint Joseph (CT) at 1 p.m. from Lake Myrtle Park 3. USJ will provide live stats through https://www.usjbluejays.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/boxscores/20240313_kx9j.xml
