Baseball Falls to Keystone in Florida Opener

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Utica University baseball team dropped its opening game at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational to the Keystone College Giants, 14-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Jack Scanlon (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) led the team with a pair of hits (2-3, run scored) while Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) each had one. Longeretta drove in the team's lone run in the 1st inning on a fielder's choice.

Kooper Knabe (Cortland, NY/Cortland) got the start and went four innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and a walk. He also struck out five. Kody Czternastek (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) tossed two frames and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks. Tim Martin (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls Lima) threw the 7th inning and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk.

Knabe got out of the top of the 1st unscathed as the reigning E8 Rookie of the Year struck out the first two batters and, following a two-out single to center, forced a foul out pop fly to right fielder Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton) to end the half inning.

The Pioneers would give Knabe a run to work with in the 2nd. With one away and runners on first and third, John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice and beat out the returning throw to first base that could have ended the inning. This allowed Jack Scanlon (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) to come home from third for a 1-0 lead.

Keystone answered right back though as a leadoff single by Justin Mann was followed up by a Josh Parks double that sent Mann home to even the score. The Giants added five more runs in the 2nd, highlighted by a no out grand slam, to lead 6-1.

Over the next couple of innings Utica failed to get a runner in scoring position while Keystone tacked on four more runs to take a 10-1 win into the bottom of the 5th.

Utica would have runners in scoring position over the final three innings however, none could be brought home. The Giants scored four more runs over their final two trips to the plate to end the game after seven innings.

Utica (3-3, 0-0 Empire 8) will take on Dickinson College on Sunday for a doubleheader at 9:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Both games will be played at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL.
