Women's Track & Field Readies for Split Weekend

UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's track and field team will compete at two different meets this weekend. A majority of the team will travel to Cortland, NY for the Cortland Classic beginning on Friday, April 19 at 2 p.m. and continuing Saturday, April 20 at 9 a.m. A small group will head to the University of Albany for the Bobbi Palma Spring Classic on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out: Last weekend at the Jerry Gravel Classic, the Pioneers took the win with 194.25 points. The highlight of the meet was by Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) as she broke her own school record in the discus with a throw of 42.41m. Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) jumped two season bests in both her jumps and earned two wins on the afternoon. She won the long jump with a distance of 5.52m and took first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.18m. Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) also boasted a pair of wins as she won the 200m with a time of 25.90, and the 400m clocking in at 58.72, both season best times. Mix was also part of the 4x100m relay squad along with Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello), Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor), and Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) who took first place with a time of 49.94.
 
Field Athlete of The Week: Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) has been named Empire 8 Co-Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league on Monday. Cary broke her own school record in the discus throw, throwing 42.41m at the Jerry Gravel Classic this past weekend. The freshman has now broken the school record in two-straight appearances as she also turned in a phenomenal performance at the Pioneer Spring Invite.
 
In The Polls: In the regional rankings that came out on Tuesday, April 19, the women's team is currently in ninth place with 377.09 points for the second week in a row. Some of the team's top point scorers include Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) (78.33), Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) (55.17), Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello) (51.22), Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) (51.07), and Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) (39.71). 
 
In the Top 30: So far this season, the Pioneers currently have three athletes in the top 30 in the NCAA Division III rankings. In the long jump, Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) jumped her way to 30th place thanks to her season best jump of 5.52m last Saturday. This is just shy of her all-time personal best of 5.56m. Allie Cary's (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) school record toss of 42.41m in discus throw has her in the 27th spot. Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) is positioned to have another All-American finish this season, as she holds the fourth spot with a top throw of 14.32m. 
 
Cementing Their Names: After multiple big performances the Pioneers rearranged the top-ten all-time lists for different events at the Jerry Gravel Classic last weekend. In the high jump, Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) jumped an outdoor personal best of 1.52m to earn a tie for seventh place. In the triple jump, Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) and Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello) both jumped outdoor personal bests to take third and fourth all-time. Devitt is now third (11.18m), and Gholson is fourth (11.00m). Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) beat her school record for the discus throw, tossing the disc 42.41m to better her standing at first, and Hailey Hrouda (Wappingers Falls, NY/Royce Ketcham) threw 34.44m to take tenth place all-time. Riley King (Oswego, NY/Oswego) threw a massive personal best in the hammer throw of 45.14m which landed her second.
 
Mix Mountain: In the current Empire 8 standings, Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) holds the conference lead in four different events. She is first place in the 100m (12.43), 200m (25.90), 400m (58.72) and is part of the 4x100m team along with Zeniyah Gholson (Monticello, NY/Monticello), Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) and Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) that holds the conference lead with a time of 49.94. Mix is also qualified for regionals in the 100m, 400m, and 4x100m. 
 
Havin' A Fahy Day: Two-time All-American Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) is having another extraordinary season as she leads the conference in shot put by more than four feet. Not only does she have the conference lead, her throw of 14.32m also leads the AARTFC region. Also in the Empire 8 conference standings, Fahy's discus throw of 37.03m has her ranked third, just behind teammate Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) (42.41m). 
 
Jump Start: So far this outdoor season, Nora Devitt (Beverly, MA/Beverly) has made her presence felt in the jumping events. In every meet Devitt has competed in this year, she has won the long and triple jump. In the current Empire 8 conference standings, Devitt leads in long jump (5.52m) and is second in triple jump (11.18m). In the AARTFC rankings, she is sixth in long jump and 12th in triple jump. 

Up Next: The team will travel to Troy, NY for the RPI Capital District Classic on Friday, April 26 with a start time to be determined.
