Men's Lacrosse Readies for Poly and Fisher

UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team prepares for a two-game week against SUNY Poly and St. John Fisher. The team hosts Poly on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. for the annual Mike Parnell Game. Utica then plays Fisher for Senior Day on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. to round out its regular season.

Last Time Out: The team took down the Keuka College Wolves 16-10 on April 17. Both sides of the ball played stout and freshman Ryan Considine (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) led all scorers with 10 points on five goals and five assists. Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) collected five goals on five shots on goal. John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) tallied three goals on three shots on goal and Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley), Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) and Lucas Donahue (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) recorded at least one goal for Utica. Luke Rinaudo-Concessi (Babylon, NY/West Babylon), Kevin O'Brien-Bruno (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco) and Landen Frey collected one assist. Serrano has 10 points in the last four games while Considine has a point in 11 out of 14 games in his freshman campaign. Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) has played great fundamental defense as he's caused a turnover in 12 out of 14 games. Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) picked up his fifth win along with making 11 saves, eight in the first half and three in the second. Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) played the last 10 minutes of action, where he gathered two saves. Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) had a fantastic day at the face-off X, going 15-for-22 with eight ground balls. Utica was almost perfect clearing the ball, as the team went 21-for-22. The Pioneer man-down defense held its own as Keuka had 12 man-up opportunities and only capitalized on three. Costanza and Serrano opened the scoring in the first quarter, going up 2-0 with 11:32 remaining. Keuka responded about two minutes later, cutting the lead to 2-1. Soon after, Considine scored back-to-back goals between the 8:36 and 6:54 mark as Utica went up 4-1. Each team would respond with one more goal before the second quarter, as the Pioneers went into the second up 5-2. Serrano opened the scoring in the second quarter with a feed from Consdine and just under a minute later, the Wolves struck back making it a 6-3 Utica lead with 10:35 left. Keuka made it a two-goal game with 8:40 to play and a minute later, C. Frey ran down the ally and let off an absolute rip, which found the back of the net and Pioneers went to halftime with a  7-4 Utica advantage. Utica scored four unanswered goals in the beginning of the third quarter. Spoto, Considine and Serrano each tallied an apple between the 12:35 and 11:04 mark as Utica would lead 11-4. The Wolves scored with 10:29 remaining and Considine answered back with two straight goals, taking a commanding 13-5 lead. Four more goals were scored to end the third, as the Pioneers went into the fourth with a 15-7 lead. Keuka scored three goals compared to Utica's one in the fourth. The Pioneer's eight goals in the third quarter ultimately led them past the Wolves, 16-10.
 
Senior Day: Utica will recognize 10 seniors prior to their game against Fisher on Saturday: Matt Trimboli (Massena, NY/Massena), Kevin O'Brien-Bruno (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco), Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley), Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley), Luke Rinaudo-Concessi (Babylon, NY/West Babylon), Hayden Shachel, John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon), Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and Chase Rorick (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima).
 
Record Holder: The reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week, Ryan Considine (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), has 40 points on 25 goals and a team-leading 15 assists. He tied the program-record 10 points against Keuka with his five goals and five assists. Considine has 39 ground balls, second most on Utica behind face-off specialist Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst).
 
Back End: Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks), Chase Rorick (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Aaron Bergquist (Brewerton, NY/Central Square) looked decisive in their 16-10 defeat over Keuka. The trio has combined for 45 caused turnovers, Brown is responsible for 28 of them which is top four in league play.
 
Rounduut Valley Duo: Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) and Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) are top three on Utica with 63 points. The two combined for nine points against Keuka, scoring six goals and dishing out three apples.
 
Scouting Poly: The Wildcats are 8-4 overall with a 4-1 record in NAC play. The team's most recent win came against Thomas College, 23-3. Poly went on a six-game winning streak from March 22 through April 7. Junior midfielder Luke Taylor leads the team with 35 points on 27 goals and eight assists. Taylor has a goal in every game except for the team's first against SUNY Potsdam on March 9. Graduate student attackman Andrew Mayock leads Poly with 18 assists. Graduate student faceoff specialist Dillion May has a .409 faceoff percentage (61-149). Senior goaltender Joseph VanZandt has started 10 games, sporting a 5-4 record. The Pioneers are 14-1 overall against Poly. Utica won 12 consecutive matchups from April 25, 2000, through March 2, 2019. Poly's only victory came on March 1, 2020 (8-6).
 
Scouting Fisher: St. John Fisher enters Saturday's conference matchup with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-0 in league play. The team is on a four-game winning streak, all against conference opponents. Fisher leads the E8 with 226 goals and a 5.4 goal margin. They have 31 penalties which is the least amount in conference play, 50 less than Utica who has the most. Senior attackman Matthew Kemmis leads Fisher and the Empire 8 with 43 goals, averaging nearly three per game. Over the team's last four games, he has 16 goals for 22 points. Senior face-off specialist Logan Grom has a .567 face-off percentage (132-233). Senior Goalie Ben Hammond sports a 9-6 record along with a 9.29 goals-against average and a .528 save percentage. Defenseman Jack Cornell leads the E8 with 35 caused turnovers, causing 12 in the Cardinal's last three games.
