ROCHESTER, NY - Three members of the Utica University baseball team have been named to the Empire 8 All-Tournament team, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Junior pitcher
Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro), junior outfielder
Josh Duval (Utica, NY/Proctor), and sophomore first baseman
Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional) captured all-tournament accolades.
Callo Jr. made one start which came in Utica's 15 inning win over Russell Sage in an elimination game on Friday, May 10. He went nine frames and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, four walks and two hit batters while striking out nine. Beginning in the bottom of the 5th, Callo retired 12 of the next 15 Sage batters to keep the Pioneers ahead entering the 9th with the score still 3-2.
Duval had at least one hit in each of his four games, going 7-for-18 with three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. In the team's 15 inning win over Sage, Duval clutched up with a 3-for-6 performance that included a pair of timely doubles and an RBI. He was also previously named to the All-Empire 8 First Team.
Salbinski also had at least one hit in his four games, going 7-for-17 with a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored. In his final two tournament games the sophomore went 5-for-8 with four RBIs, one home run and three runs scored. In the championship game alone, Salbinski hit his lone long ball as part of a 3-for-3 performance. He was also previously named to the All-Empire 8 Second Team.
The Pioneers completed their 2024 campaign having won eight consecutive league games to qualify for the postseason while also having reached their third title game in the last four seasons.
