POTSDAM, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team took down the SUNY Potsdam Bears in shutout fashion Wednesday night, 2-0.
Finding the back of the net for the Pioneers was Amber Piersma (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham), who netted her fourth goal of the season, and Natalia Bell (Cortland, NY/Groton) who tallied her first collegiate goal. Assisting on the Piersma goal was Noella Burlette (Manchester, CT/Manchester), and on the Bell goal was Ayla Flockton (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North). Utica outshot Potsdam 19-5 with 13 of the Pioneer attempts falling on goal. Rory Richar, Cora Kraft (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), Samantha Kogut (North Adams, MA/Drury), Bell, Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville), Bella Noble (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), Piersma, and Megan Fedish (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) each recorded at least one shot on goal in the winning effort. Utica also outdid Potsdam in corners with six, compared to the lone Bears corner. In goal for the Pioneers, goalkeeper Hannah Pcola (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham) recorded her first shutout in a Pioneer uniform making two saves in the contest.
The first half saw an offensive onslaught from the Pioneers, with Kraft recording the first shot of the game in only the third minute, followed by shots from Kogut and Noble not long after. Utica would continue the offensive pressure for the rest of the half, recording seven more shots in the frame. Amber Piersma (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham) would find the back of the net in the 39th minute off a feed from Noella Burlette (Manchester, CT/Manchester). Goalkeeper Hannah Pcola (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham) would go on to end the half keeping the Bears scoreless.
The second frame was much like the first, with Utica continuing to keep the offensive pressure going with two sets of back to back corners, but were unable to record a shot until the 68th minute. Natalia Bell (Cortland, NY/Groton) would be the one to double the lead for the Pioneers off a feed from Ayla Flockton (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) in the 70th minute for her first career goal, putting the Bears on ice. Utica would then go on to record six shots in the remainder of the frame, four of which fell on the Potsdam goalkeep.
Utica (2-3, 0-0 Empire 8) continues its road trip to take on Hamilton College next Wednesday, September 18. Game time in Clinton, NY is set for 4:30pm.
