Men's Basketball Set for Weekend Matchups

UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's basketball team continues conference play this week as the team takes on the Hartwick College Hawks at home on Friday, January 24 at 7:30pm on Miga Court inside the Clark Athletic Center. The team then travels to Albany, NY to take on the Russell Sage College Gators on Saturday, January 25 at 4pm.

Last Time Out: The team took home its second straight conference victory this afternoon as the team took down the Alfred University Saxons by a score of 68-56. Four Pioneers finished in double figures in scoring. Hagen Foley (Albany, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) (19), Dayion Thompson (Beacon, NY/Kimball Union Academy) (15), Jordan Cain (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (13) and Damien Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) (10) each finished with double figures. Call was the team's leading rebounder with nine, followed by Liam Teague (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) with eight. Call was also able to spread the wealth by dishing out three assists. Both Teague and Thompson each recorded a block, while Teague, Cain, and Isaiah Smith (Amsterdam, NY/Schalmont) each swiped at least one steal
 
He's Still At It: Damien Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) put together some stellar outings for the Pioneers last week. The senior forward totaled 41 points in three games for an average of 13.7 points per game. Call was great from the floor, shooting 62.5 percent across the three games. Call also tallied 18 boards, averaging six rebounds per game. He also dished out six assists and swiped three steals. Against Geneseo, Call netted 10 points on 45.5 percent shooting from the floor. Call nabbed six rebounds, and swiped himself a steal as well. Against Houghton, Call nabbed a season high 21 points on 83.3 percent shooting from the floor, and was 1-2 from three point range. Call also managed to haul in three rebounds, as well as three assists and two steals. Against Alfred, Call was good for another 10 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the floor. Call nabbed nine rebounds as well as three assists. 
 
Freshman Standout: Jordan Cain (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) was spark off the bench for Utica last week, as the freshman nabbed 26 points across three games. The freshman guard was able to shoot over 47 percent from the floor and just under 43 percent from three point range across the three games. Against Houghton, Cain netted 10 points on 60 percent shooting from the floor, and was 1-2 from three point range. Cain also went 3-4 from the free throw line, and nabbed two steals. Against Alfred, Cain nabbed a career-high 13 points on 57 percent shooting from the floor. From the free throw line, Cain was 4-5 while managing two rebounds and a steal. 
 
Scouting Hartwick: The Hartwick College Hawks are 2-13 on the season and are 2-4 in conference play. Mike Gitz has been the team's leading scorer averaging 11.7 points per game. Joey McLaurin is not far behind Gitz, averaging 10.2 points per game. Gitz has been the team's top shooter, shooting 44.5 percent from the floor this season, and over 40 percent from outside the arc. McLaurin has been a playmaker on offense for the Hawks, recording 39 total assists this season. Brian Bonin is currently the team's leading rebounder with 91 total rebounds and is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. Henry Perkins has been a stout defender for the Hawks, with seven blocked shots on the season. 
 
A Look at Sage: The Russell Sage College Gators are 12-3 and have posted a 5-1 record in conference play. Trevor Green has been the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.2 points per game. Avery Oduro-Dompreh is the team's top shooter, shooting 58 percent from the floor this season. Noah Girard has been the team's top threat outside, shooting 35 percent from outside the arc. Oduro-Dompreh is the team's leading rebounder with 121 total rebounds for an average of just over eight rebounds per game. Despite leading the team in points, Green has been able to spread the wealth for the Gatore, dishing out a team high 40 assists this season. 

Up Next: The team returns home to take on crosstown rival and Empire 8 Conference newcomer SUNY Poly. Tip off from Miga Court inside the Clark Athletic Center on Tuesday, January 28 is set for 7:30pm.
