UTICA, NY - The No. 11 Utica University women's hockey team fell 3-0 in non-conference play against No. 5 Oswego State on Tuesday evening at the Nexus Center.
Ally Nolan (Westford, MA/Chatham University (NCAA DIII)) and
Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) led the team with seven shots each. 11 other players registered at least one shot. Utica edged Oswego at the faceoff dot, 25 to 23.
Kendall Best (Troy, MI/Troy HS / Belle Tire),
Hailey Modlin (Phoenix, AZ/Boston Shamrocks) and
Jordan Kowalski (Chicopee, MA/Westfield) won six each, while
Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, NY/Plattsburgh State University (NCAA DIII)) and
Angelina Garganese (Winter Springs, Fl/Florida Alliance) posted at least one.
Both teams were scoreless on their respective power plays, Utica (0-4) and Oswego (0-3)
Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) was a force between the pipes, posting 33 saves.
The No. 11 Pioneers started the game with four shots, dominating the offensive zone for the first three minutes of action. The No. 5 Lakers scored first on a short-handed chance, taking an early 1-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Both teams finished the period with a combined 21 shots on goal, 11 for Oswego and 10 for Utica. The Lakers finished the first period with a 1-0 advantage.
Both teams went scoreless in the second period, combining for 28 shots on goal. Oswego had multiple grade-A chances on the doorstep, but Hawthorne had other ideas and denied all chances. The Lakers did a great job keeping the Pioneers outside the middle of the ice, forcing low-quality chances. Oswego would take their 1-0 lead into the third period.
The Lakers scored two goals in the third period to close out the game, 3-0.
Utica (12-5-0, 3-1-0 UCHC) hosts Manhattanville for a pair of games on Friday, January 31at 2 p.m. and Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at the ADK Bank Center and are free admission.
