UTICA, NY - Utica University's women's hockey team took on Elmira College for the second straight night, falling by a score of 2-1. The Pioneers struck in the first period, but two scores by Elmira in the final frame tilted the scales for the visitors. Utica now sits at 3-4 overall this season, with a 2-2 record in the UCHC.
Despite a lower total on the final scoreboard, both teams showed significantly stronger offense than their opening-night outputs. After both teams combined for 32 shots on night one, Elmira took 34 shots on night two, with the Pioneers accounting for another 25.
Elliana Lasher (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored the lone Utica goal unassisted.
Cate Hart (Norfolk, MA/Proctor Academy) put two shots on target in all three periods to lead the team with six, with only Lasher's three joining Hart with more than two shots on goal.
Katherine Sheahan (Oak Lawn, IL) continued to operate as the top Utica goalie, saving 32 of 34 shots in her 59:18 time on ice.
Elmira's two goals were scored by Sarah Waszkielewicz and Amber Meluzio, who scored the game-winner. Mandy McCarrick added an assist on Waszkielewicz's goal, with Savannah Barber and Alayna Toole assisting on Meluzio's. The Soaring Eagles' goalie, Sara Sevcikova, saved all but one of the 25 shots she faced.
The team's next game will be a local rivalry matchup with #15-ranked Hamilton College. The Continentals will host the December 2nd game at their Russell Sage Rink, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Pioneers return to the Nexus Center just a few days later on Friday, December 5th. That game will feature #4-ranked Middlebury College in a contest set to begin at 6:00 pm.
