Wrestling went crazy this past weekend at Utica University, with Matt Bonato (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) and Jackie Mace (Montour Falls, NY/Odessa-Montour) being selected as the final Pioneer Athletes of the Week to cap off 2025. 

The Junior Bonato was integral to a massive Pioneer victory in the team's first home meet of the 2025-2026 season, securing a big individual win to help the team defeat Keystone by a 55-0 final. In his 157lb bout, Bonato absolutely dominated, defeating the opposition via tech fall by a final score of 16-0. The Liverpool graduate accomplished this overwhelming feat in just under a minute and a half, taking down his opponent in the opening moments and then notching four consecutive near falls while never relinquishing control as he sped to the 16-0 decision. Bonato improved to 6-5 with the win, grabbing his third tech fall of the season.

Mace, a rookie wrestler, had a multi-win outing during the Pioneers' trip to the Terrier Round Robin this past Sunday out in Hiram, Ohio. In the open, Mace defeated Brooke Walsh of Alfred State and Basil Kiracofe of Carthage to capture a pair of big victories to cap off the fall semester. Mace's win over Walsh came in a clutch clash, as she took down her Pioneer counterpart by a 10-8 decision. Then, in the final match of the day, Mace defeated Kiracofe by fall, taking down the Carthage wrestler by a 10-4 final. Mace grabbed her fifth and sixth wins of the 2025-2026 season.
