ELMIRA, NY - The Utica University women's wrestling team saw
Jazmene Molina (La Mirada, CA/Valencia) (124lb) place second overall at the region 1 championships, hosted by Elmira. She will now advance to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) as the first wrestler in program history to do so.
Molina placed second overall in the 124lb weight bracket, going 2-1 on the afternoon. She began the championships by defeating Natalia Morales of NJCU by fall in 0:53.
In the semifinal, Molina won by decision over Cailan Drake of Sacred Heart, 11-4. Molina entered the second period down 4-2 but ultimately pulled away in the second period with 11 points to take the victory. Molina fell by fall in the final match to Linda Holeman of Western New England by fall in 3:30.
Lauren Palmer (Wingdale, NY/Dover) wrestled at 124lb and went 1-1 on the day. She fell to Holeman in the first round then followed it up with a pin against Olivia Delegas of New England College by fall in 1:14.
Braylin Jones (Payson, UT/Salem Hills) and
Rebekah May (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) each wrestled at 131lb. Jones picked up a win over Morgan Gora of New England College by tech fall in 1:43.
Gillian Mills (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) wrestled at 138lb, going 1-2 with her win coming over Tess Clabaugh of Elmira College by tech fall in 0:59.
Olivia LaPoint (Lake George, NY/Lake George) wrestled at 145lb.
Molina will head to the Xtreme Arena in Coralville, Iowa for the National Championships on March 7 at 8. Both days are at 10 a.m.
