UTICA, NY - The Utica men's lacrosse team was edged 9-6 against Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Six different players recorded at least one goal:
Landen Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley),
Ryan Considine (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee),
Aaron Bergquist (Brewerton, NY/Central Square),
Ryan Hollenbeck (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker),
Lucas Donahue (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) and
Noah Erickson (Auburn, NY/Auburn).
Nolan Shea (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) tallied one assist and Frey and Considine led Utica with two points each (one goal and one assist).
Considine and Donahue combined for 23 shots, eight of them on goal. Considine had three and Donahue had five.
Bergquist held Oswego's leading attackman, Garrett Elston to zero goals and one assist.
Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) played his best game of the season, making 14 saves. He made eight saves in the first half and six in the second. All coming in very timely situations.
Oswego jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the first quarter. With 10:54 left, Bergquist scored his first goal of the season as he cleared the ball down the field and got off a clean shot, making it 1-1. With 8:35 remaining, Donahue dodged down the left ally and ripped a shot from distance to give Utica a 2-1 lead. The Lakers scored one more goal in the first, tying the game at 2-2.
The Lakers scored three goals in seven minutes to open the second quarter. Considine notched the Pioneers' only goal of the quarter, making it a 5-3 game entering the third quarter.
Hollenbeck and Frey scored two quick goals in just under a minute between the 5:04 and 4:35 mark. Oswego found the back of the net two more times in the frame to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
Erickson tallied Utica's' lone goal in the fourth quarter on a great shot down the ally and Oswego had two of their own, taking home a 9-6 win.
Utica (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) plays on Thursday, March 20 at 4 p.m. against Oneonta State.
