Men's Lacrosse Gets Set For Poly and Brockport

UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team faces SUNY Poly on Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 4 p.m. at Gaetano Stadium. The team then travels to SUNY Brockport on Saturday, April 12 for a 1 p.m. faceoff.

Last Time Out: Men's lacrosse made a statement win over Keuka College with a 21-6 victory on April 5. Utica collected their first Empire 8 conference win of the season while Nolan Shea recorded a career-high seven points off six goals and one helper. Four of Shea's goals came in the first quarter and Ryan Considine (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) currently leads the Empire 8 with 39 points off 22 goals and 17 assists. Point production: Ryan Considine (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) had five goals on seven shots on goal and currently has at least two points in eight consecutive games. This was his second time totaling six points this season. Logan Waterman (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) led Utica with three assists. Michael Reid (Tully, NY/Tully) (two goals), Quinn Orsini (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) (one goal and one assist), Landen Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) (two assists), Colin Musso (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (one goal and one assist), Noah Erickson (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (two goals), Michael Mecca (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) (one assist), Jack LaFayette (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) (one goal), Hayden Sachel (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) (one goal), Jarrett Sherman (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (one goal), Andrew Sacco (New Haven, CT/North Haven) (one assist), Lucas Donahue (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake)(one assist) and Colin Zouck (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union)(one assist). All three goalies for Utica saw playing time. Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) played the whole first half, making one save behind a fierce defensive unit. Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) played 20 minutes in the second half and made two saves, one coming on the doorstep. Owen Mix played the last 10 minutes and made one save. Cade Bourcy (Syracuse, NY/Skaneateles) went seven for 11 at the faceoff X followed by Trent Herlehy (Hamburg, NY/Frontier Central) winning seven out of nine. Chase Nappi (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) went three for seven and Jack Caruso (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) went two for three. Mecca was a force on the wings, collecting six ground balls. Utica was suffocating on its ride, forcing Keuka into 23 total turnovers and combining for 10 caused turnovers. Gianpaul Cooper (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Vincent Bernardo (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and Shamus Edlund (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) had two each while four other players notched one. The Pioneers won the ground ball battle 38 to 15 and won 19 faceoffs compared to the Wolve's 11. Utica went two for three on man-up opportunities and held Keuka to zero goals on their one chance. Utica scored seven goals in the first quarter compared to Keuka's two. The Wolves scored first with 13:05 left in the quarter on a goal from Harrison Root. Root led all Keuka players in points with three goals. At 11:41,  Hollenbeck would get the Pioneers on the board with an assist from Shea, tying the game at one. Utica would rattle off five consecutive goals from the eleven-minute mark before Keuka would answer back. The Pioneers would take a 7-2 lead into the second.  Utica scored all six goals in the second quarter before Keuka could even blink. The Wolves tallied two goals late in the quarter, but Utica would enter halftime with a 13-4 advantage. The Pioneers totaled eight goals in the second half while Keuka had two as Utica would go on to win 21-6.
 
Clamping Down: Bergquist, Musso, Sacco, Gianpaul Cooper (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Mecca have been scooping groundballs with ease as of late. The five players have totaled 41 groundballs combined in three consecutive games, all against conference opponents (Nazareth, Fisher and Keuka). Bergquist, Musso, and Sacco are also top three on Utica in caused turnovers, totaling 34 between the trio.
 
Between the Pipes: Oswald enters the week with a 13.36 goals against average and a .455 save percentage. He recorded 20 saves against Fisher which was his most saves this season.
 
Watch Him Go: Considine leads the Empire 8 with 39 points off 22 goals and 17 assists. In conference play, he is fourth in shots per game, averaging 8.90 and has at least two points in the last eight games. In Utica's last outing against Keuka, he tallied all six points in the first three quarters. In the last few games, Consdine's dodging from all areas of the field has opened up shooting lanes for players like Erickson, Shea and Hollenbeck.
 
Career Numbers: Considine has 83 career points in 26 games and is five points away from cracking the top-15 in program history (88 - James Daniele). Oswald is second all-time in wins (23), fifth all-time in saves (422) and 10th in goals-against average (12.14). Sacco is 11th all-time with 47 caused turnovers.
 
About Poly: The Wildcats are 5-4 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 play. They dropped their past two games against Nazareth (17-6) and Brockport (19-3). Poly's league win came against Keuka on March 29 (18-11). Luke Taylor leads the Wildcats with 30 points (19 goals and 11 assists). He has at least two points in every game except against Potsdam where he totaled one goal. Taylor's best game came against Keuka where he scored four goals and three assists. Payton Thomas is second on Poly with 22 points (12 goals and 10 assists). He has a team-leading four man-up goals and has 11 points in the team's last three games (all conference games). Graham Genevick has a .343 faceoff percentage (47-137) and 14 groundballs. Liam Podszebka leads all defenders on the Wildcats with 39 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers. He has 20 groundballs and six caused turnovers in the last four games along with one goal and one assist. Joseph VanZandt starts between the pipes with a 12.22 goals-against average (sixth in the conference) and a .531 save percentage (fifth in the conference).
 
About Brockport: The Golden Eagles are 4-6 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 play. The team has lost two of its last three games against Allegheny (W, 14-6), Ithaca (L, 25-6) and Hartwick (L, 11-9). Nate Askin leads Brockport with 20 goals and nine assists and has seven points in the last three games against Hartwick (two goals and one assist), Geneseo (one goal and one assist) and Poly (one goal and one assist). Carson Colucci and Jacobs Pierson are second on Brockport with 12 goals each. Jack Rice is second on the Golden Eagles with 17 points (nine goals and eight assists). Nicolas Ange has taken the majority of the team's faceoffs, posting a .414 percentage (46 of 111). On Defense, Tim Hubbard has 15 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers. He collected a season-high five against Poly and four caused turnovers against Hartwick. Goalie Jack Acker is fifth in league play with an 11.25 goals-against average and second in the E8 with a .592 save percentage.
 
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers travel to Russell Sage College on Wednesday, April 16 for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
