UTICA, NY - Fresh off of back-to-back Empire 8 Tournament Championships and three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, Utica men's basketball head coach
Sean Coffey is gearing up to lead his team back to the promised land for a third-straight season. This will be a big year for the man at the helm, both on and off the court, as he also adopts a new section to his job title at Utica: Assistant Athletic Director.
Â
Coach Coffey will enter his 10th season with the Pioneers this coming year, hoping to achieve yet another tournament title. So far in his head coaching tenure, he's put together an impressive resume, racking up a record of 160-68 to go along with three Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year awards, the 2022-23 ECAC Coach of the Year award, and the 2024-25 NABC District III Coach of the Year award.
Â
Since Coffey took over, the Pioneers have stood alone atop the Empire 8, making the postseason in eight of his first nine seasons at the helm. In that time, they've captured three Empire 8 Tournament Championships and made the NCAA Division III Tournament three times, producing a first-round victory over Babson in the 2023 edition of the dance.
Â
After achieving 150 career wins and 100 career conference wins this past season, Coach Coffey will look to continue adding to his already incredible resume at Utica University, now with an additional role as Assistant Athletics Director. In this role, he will pick up extra departmental responsibilities and become even more integral to the success of the Utica University athletics department. In one of his first acts as Assistant Athletic Director, Coach Coffey recently began serving on the Pioneer Hall of Fame Committee, helping select a special group of Pioneer icons for induction into the Hall of Fame this upcoming fall.
