Women's Soccer Defeats Elmira

ELMIRA, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team collected another conference win on Saturday afternoon as the team defeated the Elmira College Soaring Eagles by a score of 2-0.

Finding the back of the net on both Pioneer goals was Amber Piersma (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham) who netted both Pioneer goals within four minutes of each other. Piersma also led the Pioneer attacking front with four shots and two shots on goal. Adrianna Calabria (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) also managed to get in on the offensive action with three shot attempts, while Madison Wagner (Saukville, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels) managed two shots on goal. Natalia Bell (Cortland, NY/Groton) and Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville) each managed a shot on goal, while Samantha Kogut (North Adams, MA/Drury) got her name on the scoresheet with an assist on one of Piersma's goals. In goal for the Pioneers, Hannah Pcola (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham) recorded the clean sheet while only having to make three saves.

Utica would get the offense going quickly with Wagner firing off the first two shots of the contest in the third and seventh minute. Utica would only be able to fire off one more shot in the opening frame, which would come off the foot of Cora Kraft (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), heading into the halftime break in a scoreless tie.

Coming out of the break, both teams would continue to vie for possession, until a shot from Piersma would end in a foul inside the box, giving Piersma an opportunity for a penalty kick that would find its way into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie at 1-0 Pioneers. Less than four minutes later, Piersma would find the back of the net again off of a feed from Kogut that would put the Pioneers ahead by two. Both teams would continue to fight for possession, but the Pioneers would hold on for the win by a score of 2-0.

Utica (5-3-2, 2-0-1 Empire 8) returns to action on Wednesday, October 1 as the team hosts the SUNY Poly Wildcats in a cross-town clash. Game time from Laura M. Casamento Field is set for 4pm.
