UTICA, NY - Utica University's men's wrestling team is set to return to action by traveling to compete in a tri-meet hosted by Lackawanna College. In addition to Utica, Jamestown Community College will also wrestle in the event. Action is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm in Lackawanna College's Student Union.
Rennie Rodarmel Recap: The Pioneers finished sixth overall with 59.5 points at the Rennie Rodarmel Allstate Invitational on Sunday morning at Lycoming College's Keiper Recreation Center. Utica was paced by strong runs from
Sean Aldrich (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Seth Richardson (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain), who each advanced to their respective championship bouts. Aldrich produced an impressive day at 149 pounds, recording back-to-back falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals before finishing as the runner-up, while Richardson battled his way to the 174-pound final with a fall in the quarterfinals and a semifinal decision to place second. Utica also saw additional point-scoring performances throughout the brackets, including consolation wins from
Nuallan King (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl Area High School), Vince Geritano, and
Marco Milankovic (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park), as the Pioneers competed against a deep field and continued to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Where the Records Lie: Former Pioneer
Trevor Cortright (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) retained his program records over this season, but many other Utica wrestlers moved up, and filled in the record book. Richardson has made some of the most significant moves so far, gaining three major decisions, moving him to second with four overall, and moving to third with his fourth career technical fall. He additionally became the second Pioneer to reach 10 total wins via fall, with
Rian Kirker (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) later joining the club, and freshman King currently sitting just one fall away from the milestone.
Some other big jumps have come from
Matt Bonato (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) in the technical fall category and
Caden Beecher (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) in the decision victories category. Bonato has turned in an impressive four tech falls this season, reaching five in his career, good for the second most in the program's young history. Beecher, a freshman, has won all four bouts he has competed in, all by decision. While several Pioneers sit shortly ahead of him, his youth puts him in a position to have a very fair chance of beating Cortright's current record of 12.
Up Next: Utica wrestling will return for a home dual meet against Elmira College on Friday, February 13th. Action is set to begin at 5:00 pm at Utica's Miga Court. The event will mark the final regular season event of the Pioneer' season.
