The wait is over! Next Tuesday, the Utica University field hockey team kicks off its 26th season of competition, looking for a trip to the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time since 2023. With an influx of new talent to pair with a consistent core of returners, this year's team has as good a shot as any to break back into the conference postseason. This year's campaign will see the team take part in its annual early-season tournament and face five additional non-conference opponents before hopping into Empire 8 play. The Starting Slate: The team will kick off its season with a three-game road trip, facing three powerful non-conference opponents over five days next week. On Tuesday, September 1st, the team will head west to Saratoga Springs for a scrap against Liberty League rep Skidmore College. Then, on the weekend, the team will head to Oneonta for the Oneonta State Invitational, where they'll match up with the Red Dragons on Friday before facing St. Lawrence on Saturday. The two tournament games will both be played at All College Field on the campus of SUNY Oneonta. See below for game times and how you can catch each contest!

2025 Recap: The Pioneers celebrated their 25th anniversary season in 2025, with the team continuing to build around a solid core, nearly all of which will return this season. The squad wrapped up its season with a record of 4-11, narrowly missing out on the Empire 8 Tournament with a conference record of 3-7. When all was said and done, a late-season loss to Brockport would see them be eliminated from playoff contention with just one game left to play. The team had a stellar showing in conference play despite their record, as they fell just short against some of the tougher teams, losing by two on the road at St. John Fisher (2-4), and by only one goal against other contending teams in Nazareth (1-2), Brockport (1-2), and Russell Sage (2-3). Each of the team's wins were also obtained in dramatic fashion, as they exploded against Morrisville, Keuka, Alfred University, and Elmira, defeating those opponents by a combined margin of 24-7. This time around, the squad will look to secure some important swing games, hoping to turn those narrow losses into major wins. With the large volume of returning talent, coupled with a highly-touted incoming class of eight freshmen, the team has already made strides in the offseason towards achieving even more victories in 2026.
 
Key Losses: Despite the Pioneers returning three of their top four scorers, and a bevy of talent in the midfield and on defense, the team was not spared from some big departures, as the program graduated four players, including three starters along with the team's leading scorer from the 2025 campaign, totaling 2,748 minutes of gametime (28% of the team's total minutes played).
 
Senior forward Makayla Arnold (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) graduated this past spring, costing the team some stellar senior leadership along with 236 minutes of gametime from last season. Departing alongside Arnold were both Pioneer captains in Alanna Fragapane (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Samantha Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls). Fragapane, the local product and president of the school's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, was the leading scorer for the blue and orange in 2025, accounting for 10 goals and three assists while netting a late-season hat trick in a win against Elmira. Young, on the other hand, led the Pioneers in the build, providing a strong midfield presence as she wrestled possession away from the opponent on many occasions, also contributing one goal and four assists last season. Her pressure on both ends of the field will be missed, and the Pioneers will look to re-structure in an attempt to fill the void left by her graduation. Lastly, Kassidy Gloude (Camden, NY/Camden) graduates after a solid season on defense for the Pioneers, with the former Camden grad contributing a defensive save and an assist in her 867 minutes played. Fragapane, Young, and Gloude also each played in all 15 games, totalling 44 starts in their 45 matches as a unit.
 
Additionally, a few underclassmen have also departed the team ahead of 2026, including goalkeeper Ismiah ChinQuee (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and other players such as Delaney Stephan (Litchfield, NY/Mount Markham), Izzy Acee (Vernon Center, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherill), Ryleigh Marsh (Oneida, NY/Oneida), Mackenzie Lyons (Clayville, NY/Sauquoit Valley), India Insinga (Unadilla, NY/Sidney), and Vanessa Leon (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead). The team is very high on its incoming class, though, and looks for these incoming athletes to provide an immediate influx of talent to the team's rotation.
 
A Consistent Core: As mentioned, despite graduating its top scorer, the team returns three of its top four offensive contributors, 22 of its 35 goals scored (63%), 10 of its 21 assists (48%), and 13 of its 18 defensive saves (72%).
 
The scoring will run primarily through a returning trio of top talents in Jocelyn Spiezio (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich), Mia Benincasa (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), and Lauren Durfey (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), who altogether scored 18 goals and tallied eight assists last season. Spiezio shot up during her junior season, having a breakout campaign as she netted eight scores and racked up three playmakers. The rising senior posted two multi-goal games on her way to an Empire 8 All-Conference Third Team selection, her first career conference honor. A major aspect of her offensive success was her supreme speed, a tool that she used to great effect when carrying the ball or making runs from the midfield. Her breakneck pace allowed her to outrun defenders to the goal, helping her notch a majority of her scores. The psychology major will be a primary midfielder once again, but has forward as one of her listed positions to offer flexibility in how she is utilized within the offense. Alongside the senior Spiezio is a pair of juniors, Mia Benincasa (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) and Lauren Durfey (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), who will continue their shared career path that runs all the way back to high school. Benincasa, who will be looking to return to her rookie season form, prepares for her third season at the head of the Pioneer formation. After a 20-point season during her rookie campaign, Benincasa logged 13 points last season thanks to five goals and three assists. However, in her third year with a majority of her teammates, the fantastic forward looks to notch another high-powered season. Durfey, who spent a majority of her first two years on the attack, will now shift further into the Pioneer formation, taking up a role as a defender with forward-playing potential. Durfey doubled her totals last season from her freshman year in 2024. In 2025, the Gansevoort native scored five goals and tallied two assists. However, her playmaking ability has always been on the verge of breaking out, and her role among the backline might allow her the opportunity to find gaps to Spiezio in the open field and Benincasa close to the cage.
 
The Pioneers' midfield presence will be an ever-rotating mishmash of the forwards and defenders, as both units will combine to create structure in the center of the playing area. However, some returners that could find themselves in the midfield more often than not will be Sydney Baptie (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich), Keeley Savona (Kingston, NY/Kingston), Emma Parker (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and a returning Alexandria Dennin (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley), who will suit up for her first game action since her rookie year in 2024. Savona will shift up slightly, moving from a primary defensive position to a midfield-focused role. In 2025, the rising senior had a spectacular campaign, playing all 15 games and starting in all but one contest while ranking second on the team and third in the Empire 8 for defensive saves with six. Baptie and Parker will continue to develop midfield roles, as the two players each played at least 10 contests last season. Lastly, Dennin will be back after missing the entire 2025 season due to injury. The Rondout Valley graduate will help fill a massive midfield role upon her much-anticipated return.
 
On defense, the team's defensive leader from a season ago, Ryleigh Johnson (Camden, NY/Camden), is back in action after logging a team-high seven defensive saves in 2025, a mark that also ranked second in the entire Empire 8. Johnson played a central defensive position, something that led her to log an extraordinary 827 minutes of gametime in her 15 games played. The Camden grad also started in every contest for the Pioneers this past season, a testament to her longevity. Former forward Deanna Jackson (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) will also take up a defensive position this season, as the now-senior will join Johnson along the backline for the pair's final campaign in the blue and orange.
 
In the cage, the team returns two goaltenders who will each be looking for breakout campaigns during their respective seasons. The sophomore duo of Sophia Weiss (Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Alannah Nole (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) will serve as the team's goal guardians this season, finding themselves in primary roles after playing just a few games during their rookie campaign. Despite the small amount of time in net, both players showed promise, with Nole notching a shutout during the end of her only game played, and Weiss posting a promising .714 save percentage in her four games of action. Both players will have a reliable defensive front ahead of them, with that hopefully allowing the pair to settle into their goaltending role.
 
Rookie Rundown: The few holes in the Pioneer formation that have occurred due to departures should be sealed up nicely thanks to an incoming class of eight freshmen who the coaching staff is very excited about. This year's rookie class consists of four offensive players and four defensive players, all of which are from various areas around the state, and a few who will be multi-sport athletes for the Pioneers. These players hail from many different areas, including three from Section II, two from Section IV, two from Section III, and one from Section IX. Gabby Chase (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown), Gabby Grounds (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy), Delaney Reilly (Marathon, NY/Marathon), and Adele Crayton (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) will join on the attack, while Gianna Marcantonio (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), Meredith Vandawalker (Ilion, NY/Central Valley Academy), Lo Robinson (Walton, NY/Walton), and Olivia Davis (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) will shore up the backline. Here is a little about each of the rookie class:
 
Gabby Chase (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) joins the Pioneers after a stellar career for the Section II-based Johnstown Lady Bills, recording 100 career points in addition to a bevy of other accolades. Chase was named a Foothills Council All-Star her junior and senior years, and an honorable mention her sophomore year, earning a spot on an illustrious list that also contained current Pioneers Mia Benincasa (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) and Lauren Durfey (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) in years' past. Chase, who was also a trackstar at Johnstown, was praised by her coaching staff for her stellar leadership and rapid growth during her time in high school. Chase, a four-year varsity player for the Lady Bills, helped lead the program to the Section II Class C Semifinals this past year as team captain.

Delaney Reilly (Marathon, NY/Marathon) comes to Utica after an illustrious athletic and academic career with Section IV school Marathon. Reilly was a four-year varsity player for the Olympians, taking home the team's offensive player of the year award in all four of her seasons thanks to her career marks of 56 goals and 17 assists, while also leading the Olympians to the 2023 Section IV Class C Championship, and securing a Class C Semifinal appearance the following year. During her junior and senior seasons, Reilly was also named a 1st-Team league All-Star, doing all this while excelling in basketball, track and field, and softball, where she also picked up an array of athletic accolades, including being a state qualifier in the 4x4 during the 2025 outdoor season. Her accomplishments weren't just limited to athletics, though, as she was Marathon's student representative for the Board of Education, while also participating in some stellar developmental organizations such as the Future Business Leaders of America.
 
Gianna Marcantonio (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) brings aptitude in a multitude of different sports upon her arrival to Utica, as she will also compete in ice hockey for the Pioneers. However, field hockey and ice hockey don't tell the full story, as the Queensbury native was also a standout in lacrosse as well, racking up a ridiculous amount of accolades across all three sports during her career. Just in field hockey alone, Marcantonio was named a two-time Foothills Council All-Star, and was also named to the NYSPHSAA All-State team her senior year. She led Queensbury to massive success during her four years on varsity, capping off her career with an appearance in the Section II Class B Championship this past fall. Her coaches applauded her hustle and drive, traits that will help her as she joins the Pioneer defense.
 
Meredith Vandawalker (Ilion, NY/Central Valley Academy) and Gabby Grounds (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) both make the hop over to the collegiate ranks from Ilion, where the pair played for Central Valley Academy.
 
Vandawalker was a stellar defender for the Thunder, being named to the NYSPHSAA Section III Tri-Valley League Second Team this past season. She also excelled in the classroom during her entire tenure at CVA, being given a scholar athlete award on three separate occasions and being an AP Scholar recipient on two separate occasions. Vandawalker, a top 10 graduate at CVA, will look to bring staunch defense and quick thinking to the Pioneer backline.
 
Grounds was also a stellar student-athlete at CVA, serving as the sparkplug for the field hockey team while also competing for the track and field program, a combination of sports she intends to continue at Utica, as she'll also be suiting up for the track team this winter. Grounds, much like her classmate Vandawalker, was also strong in the classroom. She will help contribute to the Pioneer offense this season alongside lots of local talent.
 
Adele Crayton (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) comes to Utica following a star-studded career for Section IX rep Taconic Hills. Crayton was a three sport athlete for her entire high school career, also participating in basketball and softball while with the Titans. For field hockey, Crayton collected some solid achievements, including being named to the Section IX All-Star Second Team her junior year and First Team her senior year. She also picked up an All-Patroon Conference Second Team selection this past spring for softball. Crayton will patrol the midfield and aid in the Pioneers' attack this upcoming season.
 
Lo Robinson (Walton, NY/Walton) joins the Pioneers from Section IV rep Walton, where she participated in four years of field hockey and softball for the Warriors. Robinson was a four-year varsity starter for the Warriors, making contributions on both offense and defense as she gave the program control of the field during her high school tenure. This past season, Robinson was honored as a MAC Division-II First Team All Star while leading the team in assists. Robinson also helped lead Walton to the #2 overall seed in this past season's Section IV Class C Tournament, capping off her career by guiding the Warriors to a sectional semifinal appearance. She will begin her career by playing defense for the orange and blue.
 
Olivia Davis (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) is the final freshman to join the program, and hails from Greenwich, which also produced Pioneer talents Sydney Baptie (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) and Jocelyn Spiezio (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich). Davis, who starred in two sports for the Section II-based Witches, will also suit up in both of those sports here at Utica, playing field hockey in the fall before transitioning to basketball in the winter. Davis picked up an immense amount of accolades during her time in high school, which she capped off by guiding the Witches to the NYSPHSAA Class C Girls Basketball Championship, ultimately finishing second in the entire state. Davis has had outstanding careers in both sports, as she captained the field hockey team on their way to becoming Section II Class C Champions this past fall, even defeating Gabby Chase's (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) Johnstown team in the semifinals, before taking down Hoosick Falls to secure the title. Davis was a four-year captain for the field hockey team, also securing a spot on the Wasaren League All-Star Team twice. She will look to make a big splash for two different Pioneer programs this season.

At the Helm: Head Coach Nikki Hobaica enters her 11th season leading the program in 2026 and hopes to return the team to its spot among the usual postseason contenders. Hobaica, a remarkable part of the program's history as both a player and coach, will look to make it back to the Empire 8 Tournament after reaching the postseason in five-straight seasons from 2019-2023. The Pioneers will take on a tough non-conference schedule complete with three Liberty League opponents, two SUNYAC challengers, and a single Landmark Conference rep. The Pioneers will take on Skidmore next Tuesday to start the season before heading to Oneonta next weekend for their annual early-season tournament. Exactly a week later, the team will have its first home game, taking on RPI at 12:00 down at Gaetano Stadium. The team will then head to Morrisville the following week, battling the Mustangs ahead of Empire 8 play. Finally, the team will take a momentary pause from the Empire 8 schedule to take on Wilkes, capping off the non-conference slate.

The Pioneers will face the usual conference competition this season, opening Empire 8 play two-time reigning Empire 8 Champion SUNY Geneseo Knights. The Pioneers have some key road games this season, as they battle away against four of the five double-digit win teams from a season ago. At home, the team will have lots of opportunities to win some swing games, including three big battles against Russell Sage, Brockport, and St. John Fisher, all close games from a year ago that could have propelled the team into the playoffs had they fallen in the Pioneers' favor.
 
To cap off the preview, it's time to take a look at the Pioneers' initial three opponents, who they will take on this coming week.
 
Scouting the Thoroughbreds: The Pioneers will open the 2026 season against Skidmore next Tuesday, traveling to Saratoga Springs for a 4:00 PM contest at Wagner Park. The Pioneers faced the Thoroughbreds during the second weekend of the 2025 season, with Skidmore taking home a 4-0 win.

Skidmore finished the 2025 campaign with a 9-10 record, going 3-4 in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds will have some important pieces to replace from last year's squad, including four seniors who saw significant time: Mia Angwin, Abby Ezickson, Anna D'Amore, and Brynn Charron. Skidmore will also be without senior defender Brooke Golden, who started all 19 games in 2025.

Despite those departures, the Thoroughbreds return a number of key contributors from last season. Junior Colby Paul led Skidmore with nine goals and 18 points in 2025 and will return for her senior season. Sophomore Emma Houff also returns after recording six goals and 13 points, while Junior Erin Ohlenbusch added three goals and five assists. Sophomore Ella Costa, meanwhile, contributed five goals and eight assists in 2025 and will provide another important offensive option. Junior Gianna DiGioacchino also returns after starting all 19 games last season.

The Thoroughbreds will also bring back considerable experience between the pipes. Junior Nicole Sylvestri appeared in 16 games and started 14 during the 2025 season, stopping 82 shots while posting a .788 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average. Sylvestri handled the overwhelming majority of Skidmore's goalkeeping workload last season and returns as the team's most experienced option in the cage.
 
Scouting the Red Dragons: The Pioneers will renew their rivalry with Oneonta on Friday, September 4, when the two teams meet at All College Field as part of the Red Dragons' opening-weekend tournament. During last season's opening tournament, Oneonta claimed a 4-1 victory.
 
Oneonta finished the 2025 season with a 9-8 overall record and reached the SUNYAC Semifinals. The Red Dragons will have several important holes to fill following the departures of Molly Miller, Olivia Bonelli, Gabby Alfinito, Caitlyn Caulfield, and goalkeeper Maura Leib. Miller and Bonelli were both seniors in 2025, while Caulfield and Alfinito provided veteran experience on the defensive end. Leib also departs after serving as Oneonta's primary goalkeeper last season.
 
The Red Dragons do, however, return several players who saw significant action in last year's season-opening contest against Utica. Senior Alexandra Howell and Senior Abigail Draper both return after playing key roles in the 2025 matchup, with Howell scoring twice and Draper also finding the back of the cage. Isabella Cunha and Nina Contrera also return after contributing to the Red Dragons' attack last season. Oneonta's returning group also includes Nora Trimarchi, Julia Murphy, Marissa Stephan, Jessica Owens, Miranda Colacchio, Rylee Trunko, Lily Haverkamp, Shannon Nash, Sarah Stadelmann, Madi Elliott, and Lib Hameed.
 
Howell will once again be a major point of emphasis for the Pioneer defense after entering 2026 as one of Oneonta's top returning offensive threats. Draper, meanwhile, provides another experienced presence in the midfield, while the Red Dragons will look for increased production from their returning underclassmen to help replace the offense lost with the departures of Miller and Bonelli.
 
The cage will be one of the biggest areas of transition for Oneonta. After Maura Leib handled the majority of the goalkeeping duties last season, the Red Dragons enter 2026 with first-year goalkeepers Eva Klessel and Lilia Lepre as their two listed options. Both are new to the collegiate level, making the position one of the most notable changes for Oneonta entering the season.
 
Scouting the Saints: Utica will close out its opening week with another rematch from last season, meeting St. Lawrence on Saturday, September 5, at 3:30 PM to cap off the Oneonta Invitational. The Saints got the better of the Pioneers in their 2025 meeting, earning a 5-0 victory in Canton.

St. Lawrence finished the 2025 season with a 5-9 overall record and went 1-6 in Liberty League play. The Saints will enter 2026 with a considerably different look after graduating six seniors, including two of the team's most important contributors from last season in Caroline Hamilton and goalkeeper Elizabeth Walsh. Hamilton led the Saints in scoring with five goals and three assists, while Walsh started all 14 games in goal and recorded 121 saves with a .791 save percentage.

Despite those departures, St. Lawrence returns several important pieces from last year's squad. Junior Lily Gubbins will take on an even larger role after finishing third on the team in scoring in 2025, while Junior Maddy Shaw also returns and will serve as one of the Saints' captains. Sophomore Charlotte Lehr, Sophomore Hannah Gubbins, and Sophomore Sawyer Bailey also return after ranking among St. Lawrence's top ten scorers last season. Junior Morgan Barnard rounds out the Saints' three captains and will provide additional experience in the midfield.

The Saints will also look to returning players such as Mayson Blondek and Maggie Spire to help replace the offensive production lost with the departure of Hamilton and the other graduating seniors. In last year's meeting with Utica, Hamilton scored twice, while Lily Gubbins also found the back of the cage twice and Spire added another goal, giving the Pioneers an early look at several of the players who will be asked to carry the Saints' attack forward this season.

St. Lawrence will have a new look in goal following Walsh's graduation, but the Saints return sophomore Petra Gamage, who saw limited action as a first-year and recorded eight saves without allowing a goal in 45 minutes. Gamage will be joined by first-year Stella Gizzi, giving the Saints two new options to fill the vacancy left by their longtime starter. St. Lawrence's 2026 season preview specifically identifies Gamage as the team's most seasoned returning goalkeeper.

After Opening Weekend: Following the Oneonta State Invitational this upcoming weekend, the Pioneers will take a week-long break before facing off with Liberty League side RPI. That game will serve as the team's home-opener and will take place at Gaetano Stadium on Saturday, September 12th.
