Utica, NY (February 17, 2014) – Jon Gaffney of the nationally-ranked Utica College men’s hockey team was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week on Monday.

The senior forward netted one goal and added two assists in a 5-2 ECAC West Conference win over Nazareth last Friday night. Gaffney’s first assist came on the Pioneers’ first goal halfway through the first period. His second one came only six minutes after as he assisted on a goal by Luc Boby to help Utica take a 2-0 lead after the first period. Gaffney would score UC’s fifth goal of the game in the third period to put the game out of reach.

On the season Gaffney is third on the team with 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists). The senior captain has led the Pioneers to a 14-5-4 overall record and 9-3-1 in the conference. With his 93 career points (45 goals, 48 assists) he has moved up into a tie for fourth place on the College’s all-time scoring list with Evan Chlanda ‘13. In third place is senior classmate Trever Hertz who has 99 career points (44 goals, 55 assists).

The Pioneers return to the ice this weekend for the final two games of the season. They will host Manhattanville on Friday and Saturday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Friday night’s game is United Way Night at the Aud and Saturday’s game is the First Source Pucks for Posters Night.
