The Utica College women's volleyball team defeated host Cazenovia College
3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 31-29) Monday night in non-conference action at the Stephen M. Schneeweiss Athletic Center.
The Pioneers improved to 4-8 on the year, while Cazenovia drops to 2-8 overall. UC is 4-0 against the Wildcats over the past two seasons, including a
3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-28) victory at the Clark Athletic Center on September 5, 2007. UC defeated Cazenovia
3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-24) and
3-2 (30-20, 30-26, 28-30, 21-30, 15-13) in 2006.
Karen Crisanti (Geneva/Geneva) led all Pioneers with 11 kills and 17 digs, while senior classmate
Andrea Dekker (Reeths-Puffer/Muskegon, MI) posted eight kills, one service ace and seven digs. Freshman setter
Kaitlin Farruggia (Mt. Markham/Leonardsville) assisted on 27 kills, while tallying a game-high four service aces. Farruggia now has exactly 350 assists on the season, while Dekker is just five kills shy of the 100 mark on the year. Crisanti leads the team with 112 kills and 227 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter
Brielle Swerdlin (W. Morris Mendham/Chester, NJ) tallied two kills, 12 digs and one assist for UC. Middle hitter
Mereoni Vunibobo (Cathedral/Jamaica) blocked four shots and tallied three kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Melissa Austin (Beaver River/Castorland) notched eight kills and 11 digs. Freshman libero
Sarah Lucia (Sauquoit Valley High School/ Cassville) played in all three games and recorded 15 digs.
UC returns to action Wednesday against host Hamilton College at 7 p.m. at the Scott Field House.
