Whitesboro, N.Y. (2/12/2011) – The Utica College women's hockey team snapped a four game skid after defeating visiting Chatham University 9-0 in an ECAC Women's West contest at the Whitestown Community Center Saturday night. Senior forward
Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) netted two goals and added one assist, while junior goalie and Whitesboro native
Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) returned to her roots and stopped 23 shots in her first career shutout.
With the win the Pioneers improved to 11-10 overall and 7-8 in conference play. Sophomore forward
Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) totaled three assists on the evening , while senior forward
Darcy Hier (Centennial, CO/Colorado Selects) added one goal and one assist. Hier now has 21 assists this year and is tied for the top spot in the country with an average of one assist per contest. The Cougars remain winless and dropped to 0-15 overall.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first period when senior defender
Rebecca Heim (Westwood, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) netted a power-play goal, off an assist from Hier, at the 14:25 mark to put UC on top 1-0 early on. UC added a second goal, just under two minutes later, when junior defender
MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) netted her seventh goal of the season. Glockling and McMahon assisted on Roy's power-play tally.
UC doubled its score in the second period behind goals from Glockling and senior
Tiffany Bichrest (Harpswell, ME/Hebron Academy). Glockling's goal came 4:06 into the second period and was assisted by McMahon. Bichrest's break-away goal was short-handed and gave UC a commanding 4-0 lead with just over five minutes to go in the second period.
UC went on to net five third period goals to seal the victory. Five different players scored third period goals including
Meagan Sudik (West Bend, WI/Wisconsin Wild), Meghan Willet, Glockling,
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and Hier. Myers now has a team-high 14 goals and she ranks second on the team, behing Hier, with 23 points on the year.
Lynny Gonzales (Rochester, NY/New Hampton Prep) and
Lindsay Norton (Eden, NY/Buffalo Bisons) each chipped in with two assists, while
Emily Russell (Marblehead, MA/National Sports Academy) added one assist of her own.
Chatham goalie Breanne Mercanti stopped 23 shots in her first collegiate start for the Cougars.
The Pioneers look to complete the weekend sweep on Sunday when they return to the friendly confines of the Utica Memorial Auditorium to take on Chatham at 3 p.m.
