Utica, NY - The Utica College baseball team recorded their first win of the season Saturday as they split a double header against host SUNY Fredonia. The Pioneers won game one 8-7 however lost the second game 6-0. UC is now 1-10 overall on the season while Fredonia moves to 9-6 this year.
In game one, Utica jumped out to an early four-run lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore

Anthony Di Salvo (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) singled, and later scored as sophomore
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) doubled and feshman
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) reached on an error. Choleva then stole second and scored off a single from junior
John Grogan (Albany, NY/Albany). The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the second as they scroed three runs on five hits to pull within one run of the Pioneer lead, 4-3. Fredonia took the lead in the bottm of the fourth scoring three more runs and added another in the fifth to take a 7-4 advantage. SUNY shut down the Pioneer offense five consecutive innings before UC broke out with a four-run seventh inning. Choleva ripped a two-run single to help push Utica to victory. Junior
Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) pitched 4.2 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits, while tallying four strikeouts and only one walk.
In game two, the Blue Devils scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. SUNY followed with two more runs in the fourth and then three runs in the fifth en route an afternoon spilt with Utica. SUNY's pitcher Dlugosz threw a complete game, five-hit, shutout.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they host a non-conference double header against Medaille College. The game will be held at the Utica College Baseball Field and is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
