Utica, N.Y. (4/27/2011) – The nationally-ranked No. 2 RIT men's lacrosse team defeated host Utica College 25-8 in Empire 8 Conference action Wednesday afternoon on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Sophomore
Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) netted a team-high three goals for Utica, while junior defender
Mick Krajacic (Clay, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) added a career-high two goals and chipped in with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
RIT advanced it's ledger to a school-record 14-0, including a 7-0 mark in conference play. The Pioneers
dropped to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the E8.
Winkler and Krajacic each netted first quarter goals and the Pioneers trailed by two, 4-2, after 15 full minutes of action. Winkler added his second tally of the contest to open up the second quarter scoring and he helped the Pioneers cut the Tigers lead to 4-3 1:56 into the second. Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School) recorded his ninth goal of the year to cut the Pioneers' deficit back to two, 6-4, with 10:37 to go in the second.
RIT rattled off four straight goals in a span of 5:20 to take a commanding 10-4 lead with 3:38 to go in the first half of play. Krajacic answered with his second goal of the afternoon to cut the Tiger's advantage to five goals.
RIT poured in two more before the half and led by seven, 12-5, as the halftime horn sounded.
The nations second ranked team outscored Utica 7-2 in the third quarter and 6-1 in the final stanza to earn the convincing 17 goal victory.
Senior captain
Kevin Conway (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and junior
Zachary Menapace (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) each chipped in with one second half goal for UC, while Winkler added his third of the day midway through the fourth quarter.
Oliver Barney (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and freshman
TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) each posted an assist for the Pioneers.
Tyler Russell led the way for the Tigers with a game-high seven goals, while Jack Krzyston added four goals of his own. Junior Jordan Collins-Hartwig posted three goals and Kelso Davis registered a team-high five helpers.
UC goalies Wilson Mukrdecian and
Joe Davis (Vestal, NY/Vestal) split time in net and combined for eight saves, while Robert Tonnessen and Anthony Deleo combined for ten saves in goal for the Tigers.
Barney finished the afternoon with six ground balls and he also won 12 face offs for UC.
Utica will close out its 2011 campaign on Saturday when the Pioneers host St. John Fisher College on senior day. The contest, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., is also a part of Moose-A-Palooza weekend on the Utica College campus.
