Utica, NY - The Utica College baseball team dropped two games to Medaille College Sunday at the Utica College Baseball Field. The Mavericks won the first game 4-1 and the second game 4-3. UC falls to 1-12 overall while Medaille improves to 9-8 on the season.

In game one, the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0, first inning, lead off a two-out double from senior John Boyack. Medaille put together another run in the sixth inning after converting two-sarifice bunts and led 3-0. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth off a two-out single from senior Joe Sportman (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn). Freshman Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) scored on Sportman's hit. Choleva went 3-3 and scored UC's only run. Senior Chris Pallas (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic School) threw 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits, four walks and recording three strikeouts.

In the second game, the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Medaille leadoff, Matthew Urbanski, doubled to right field, advanced to third on a passed ball then scored on a ground ball to shortstop. Utica then held the Mavericks to three consecutive hitless innings and in the bottom of the fourth managed to take its first lead of the afternoon scoring two runs on three hits. Freshman catcher Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) singled and then scored off the bat of a Choleva double to right center. Choleva then advanced to third and scored when sophomore Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math) stroked a two-out single to left field making the score 2-1 in favor of the home team. Unfortunetly, Medaille answered in the bottom half of the inning tying the game, 2-2, and then regained the lead the following inning with two more runs. In the bottom of the sixth, UC's Choleva ropped his second double of the game and then scored off first baseman Adam Bittel (New Hartford, CT/Northwestern Region)'s base hit to right, making the score 4-3. However, the Pioneers were not able to manufacture a last inning rally and resulted in an afternoon sweep. Choleva pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five.

Choleva led UC with five hits including two doubles, three runs scored, a stolen base, and five strikeouts on the hill.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they face cross-town rival SUNYIT. The non-conference double header is scheduled to start at 2 p.m in Marcy, NY.
