Box Score Utica 3, Cortland 1 - Women's Hockey Final

Utica, NY (11/16/2012) – The Utica College women's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period and the Pioneers hung on for a 3-1 victory as they snapped a three game slide against visiting Cortland State in ECAC Women's West Conference play Friday afternoon at the Memorial Auditorium.

Freshman Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) netted an insurance goal late in the third period and she also assisted on what proved to be the game-winner to help UC advance its record to 2-3 on the year.  That game-winner came 7:11 into the second period of play from the stick of Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks).  Sophomore second liner Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) assisted on the Maines' goal and added her second assist of the year in the third period.

Junior Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) got UC on the board midway through the first period when she cashed in her second of the season off an assist from team-leading scorer Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and junior forward Brittany Dellechiaie.

With the Pioneers leading 2-0 midway through the final period, the Red Dragons (0-4, 0-3 ECAC West) were able to take advantage of a power-play when Kellie Micillo scored her first of the year off assists from Chelsey Wright and Abbie Adams. The Pioneer penalty kill unit held the Red Dragons power-play line to a 1-for-9 effort, ultimately helping UC seal the victory.

UC junior goalie Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 21 of the 22 shots she faced en route to her second victory of the year.  Her counterpart, Deanna Meunier, dropped her fourth game of the year but stopped 34 shots, including 13 in the third period alone.

The Pioneers will hit the road on Saturday when they travel to Cortland to complete the weekend conference home-and-home series at 3 p.m.
