Pioneers Snap Winless Streak - UC Gets First Win of the Season

Utica, NY (12-1-12) – Five Pioneers totaled nine wins Saturday to lead the Utica College women's swim and dive teams to their first win of the season defeating Cazenovia College, 159-123, convincingly.  UC was led by senior Michelle Allen (Canton, MA/Canton), junior Leah Kazalski (Greene, NY/Greene) and sophomores Amy Dumary (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Gwyn Joyce (Walden, NY/Valley Central) who each garnered two victories.

Allen, who recently returned from injury, took first in the 50 yard (26.89) and 200 yard freestyle (2:10.06) events while junior diver Leah Kazalski (Greene, NY/Greene) swept the diving events with scores of 173.90
and 137.75.

Classmates Gwyn Joyce (Walden, NY/Valley Central) and Amy Dumary (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) continued their solid sophomore campaigns registering wins in their respected events.  Joyce recorded times of 1:14.66 and 2:38.54 in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke while Dumary clocked times of 1:08.19 and 2:33.96 in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly.

Freshman Cecelia Gulius swam to an impressive win in her first collegiate competition taking first place in the 100 yard freestyle by almost seven seconds with a final time of 1:01.87.

The Pioneers return to the pool Saturday as they head to Rochester, NY for a match with the Tigers of RIT.  The competition is set for 1 p.m.
