#5 Plattsburgh 3, Utica 1 -
Box Score
UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's hockey team carried a 1-1 tie into the third period of play against nationally-ranked No. 5 Plattsburgh State but the Cardinals tacked on two goals in the final stanza to pull away as they earned a 3-1 victory in ECAC Women's West Conference play Sunday. UC's assistant captain Meghan Willet netted her second goal of the season and sophomore goalie
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 28 stops for the Pioneers (8-12-3, 5-9-2 ECAC West).
UC currently sits in seventh place with 12 points behind Neumann University in the conference standings. The top six teams make the conference tournament. The Knights currently have 14 points headed into a weekend set against last place Chatham University. So here's the scenario for UC: The Pioneers need to win twice over Buffalo State next weekend -- and Chatham needs two wins, or a win and a tie against Neumann in order for Utica to earn the sixth spot and the right to play in its 11th consecutive conference tournament.
Plattsburgh's Teal Glove opened the scoring on Sunday when she netted her 16th goal of the year with less than five minutes to go in the first period of play. UC was able to respond late in the second stanza when Willet found the back of the net at the 14:10 mark to knot the score at 1-1. Sophomore forward
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and junior assistant captain
Lindsay Norton (Eden, NY/Buffalo Bisons) each recorded an assist on the Pioneers' lone goal of the evening.
The Cardinals went on to net two goals in the first 10:03 of the final period to earn the three goal victory. Justine Fisher scored her eighth goal of the year just 2:08 into the period before Glove added her second of the evening midway through the final period.
UC will host Buffalo State for its final two games of the regular season on Friday and Saturday at the Aud. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
