Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) of the Utica College women's hockey team scored her 12th goal of the season 1:19 into the third period of play to help lift the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory host Chatham University Sunday afternoon. Myers currently ranks eighth in the country with an average of 1.45 points per contest and she helped improve the Pioneers' overall record to 8-10-2. Junior forward
Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) was credited with her fourth assist and 11th point of the season on the game-winner.
Utica now has 12 points in ECAC Women's West Conference play and the Pioneers are now tied with Neumann University for sixth place in the conference standings. UC has a 5-7-2 record in the ECAC West. Utica will take on Hamilton in a non conference contest before hosting conference opponents Plattsburgh and Buffalo State to wrap up regular season. Plattsburgh is ranked sixth in the country according to the latest USCHO.com national poll.
The Pioneers out shot Chatham (0-14) by a margin of 57-21 on the afternoon as sophomore goalie
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped all 21 of the shots she faced in her second shutout of the season. UC topped the Cougars by the score of 4-0 on the road Saturday night.
The contest featured 23 total penalties and the Pioneers were able to convert on 1-of-9 power-play opportunities to earn the key conference victory. Hamel and the Pioneer defense thwarted all ten of Chatham's man-up advantages to earn the one goal victory.
Through two full periods of play Utica held a 44-16 shot advantage before Myers converted on the unassisted game-winner early in the final stanza.
UC returns to the ice on Tuesday night when it travels to local rival Hamilton College for its final non conference game of the season. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. Utica's final four games of the regular season will be play at the friendly confines of the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
