Utica 7, Hamilton 0 - Field Hockey Final

Utica, NY (Sept. 12, 2012) – The Utica College field hockey team came out firing and never looked back as it downed cross-town rival Hamilton College 7-0 in non-conference play on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday night.  The Pioneers remained unbeaten as they moved their record to 4-0 this season and they also snapped a three game losing streak against the Continentals that dated back to 2008.  The Pioneers have now won two consecutive games by a seven goal margin.

The Pioneers will use their much needed momentum, headed into arguably the biggest game of the season, as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Stevens Institute of Technology (2-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m. UC has won two straight against Stevens, but the Pioneers are 2-3 all-time against the Ducks dating back to 2007.

Sophomore Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) netted two goals and assisted on three others, while classmate Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) found the back of the cage three times.  Mackey, the reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists, while Steele-Norton now has five goals.

Sophomore goalie Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) needed just one save to earn her second shutout of the season.  Classmate Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) chipped in with one goal and two assists, while defender Angela Charles (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tipped home her first goal of the year off a penalty corner.  Junior Ally Sanders (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) also added a tally of her own early in the contest.

The Pioneers, who outshot the visitors by a convincing margin of 27-1, earned a 3-0 lead at the half and poured in four more goals in the final 35 minutes to seal the victory.

Hamilton, who was coming off a tight 3-2 loss to nationally-ranked No. 15 Trinity, moved its record to 0-2 on the young season.
