Freshman defender Greg Silvestro tallied his first collegiate goal for the Pioneers
Box Score Utica, NY (Sept. 22, 2012) – Junior midfielder Jake Quattrini of the St. John Fisher College men's soccer team netted the game-winner 25 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the visiting Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over host Utica College in Empire 8 Conference play at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday afternoon. The contest was a part of the Pioneers effort to “Kick Cancer”. Utica wore special edition pink jerseys, which were auctioned off throughout the contest. All proceeds from the event will benefit cancer research at Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital in Utica.
Fisher (5-2-1, 1-0-1 E8) shot out of the gates in the overtime period and immediately worked the ball into the Utica (4-4, 0-2 E8) zone. Garhett Varin, who netted the Cardinals' first goal of the game, chipped a pass to Quattrini on the left side of the net in the box and he was able to finish the game-winner with a low shot into the far right corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Utica junior goalie
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow).
After a scoreless first half of play both teams got on the board in the 51st and 57th minutes. Varin netted his second of the year to put the Cardinals on top 1-0, off an assist from Austin Buckley. UC's equalizer just over six minute later came from the head of freshman
Greg Silvestro (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot), directly off a corner kicker from
Jeffrey Cupka (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional). It was the first goal of Silvestro's young career.
Fisher earned a 19-10 shot advantage on the afternoon and the Cardinals also took a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities. Caruso stopped three shots in net for UC, while Kyle Matcalfe made five saves in between the pipes for Fisher.
The Pioneers are 3-8-1 against St. John Fisher in their last ten meetings. Headed into the contest, the two evenly matched squads had split the series 2-2 in four previous meetings. The last time UC beat Fisher was in 2010, by the score of 3-0.
The Pioneers will hit the road again for another tough two game stretch beginning with a trip to Plattsburgh on Tuesday night. Next Saturday the Pioneers' travel to Head Coach Eric Watsons' alma mater, Williams College, to take on the nationally-ranked No. 25 Ephs for the first time in program-history.
