Utica, NY (10-29-13) – The Utica College men's and women's swim and dive teams prepare for its season home-opener Friday evening at the Utica College Pool of Champions (7 p.m.) … The women will compete in a three-way contest with William Smith and Cazenovia while the men will face Caz in a heads-up match.
UC Kicked Off Season in Three-Way Action
Utica opened up its 2013-2014 campaign this past Saturday at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY … The Hawks hosted a three-way competition with the College of St. Rose and Utica … The men went 1-2 on the day as they extended their win streak to five straight against Cazenovia but fell to St. Rose (176-41) and host Hartwick (150-50) … The women lost all three matches but fought hard against Caz losing by a mere 11 points, 102-93.
Season-Opener Notables
For the women, freshmen
Cori Brouwer (Jenison, MI/Jenison) and
Mikey Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada) guided the Pioneers as the duo combined for three victories in their collegiate debut … Brouwer recorded wins in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles against Cazenovia with times of 1:01 and 2:13 … Maxwell posted a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a clock of 27.65 while placing second in the 100-yard behind Brouwer.
On the men's side, sophomore Raphael Warnon led the way with two victories and three second place finishes on the day … Warnon recorded two wins against Caz in the 200-yard medley and 100-yard backstroke … He also tallied second place in both events against St. Rose as well as second in the 100-yard backstroke against "Wick", falling short of the win by under one tick … Freshman new addition Tyler Good opened up his Pioneer career with two early season victories in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles with times of 1:55.79 and 5:25.79 against the Wildcats of Cazenovia … Good treaded to third place in both events against St. Rose while fourth (200yd) and fifth (500yd) versus the host Hartwick.
Scouting the Opposition
William Smith finished their 2012-13 campaign with an overall record of 7-2 and will make its season-debut Friday … The Herons wrapped up last season with five-straight wins in heads-up play and placed 12th at the 2013 UNYSCSA Championships … Cazenovia opened up the season at Division II power Lemoyne College before coming home to face Marywood in the Wildcats season home-opener … Both squads lost and are currently 0-2.
Back in the Pool
The Pioneers remain home and are back in action Saturday, Nov. 9th when they welcome Wells College to the UC Pool for a heads up match … The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. … The Wells Express men's and women's swim teams opened up the season placing 5th at the Hartwick relays on Oct. 19th at Moyer Pool in Oneonta, NY … Wells is now currently 0-1 on the season after losing to Brockport State, convincingly … The men lost 65-28 while the women were downed 73-22.
