UTICA, NY (November 10, 2013) – The Utica College women's hockey team dropped a 3-1 ECAC Women's West Conference decision to visiting and nationally-ranked No. 5 Elmira College 3-1 in the Pioneers' regular season home-opener at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Sunday afternoon. UC's
Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) scored for Utica, her second of the season, while senior All-American
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) added her second assist of the year. The Pioneers fell to 0-2 overall as they were swept by the defending national champion Soaring Eagles in a home-and-home set on Saturday and Sunday.
Elmira netted the first three goals of the contest to improve to 2-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Soaring Eagles' Erin Weston tallied the visitor's first and third goals of the game. Her first came just 1:09 into the contest and her second was at the 3:08 ledger of the second period.
The Pioneers, trailing 3-0, began a late charge when Reed netted a power-play goal at the 12:58 mark of the second period, but Elmira goalie Lisa Marshall made 24-of-25 saves on the afternoon to secure the victory for the visitors.
UC's
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 33 stops in net, including several highlight reel saves, to keep the game within reach.
Utica returns to action back at home on Friday when the Pioneers host conference rival Cortland State at 2:30 p.m.
