Pine Valley, NY (11-9-13) – The Utica College women's hockey team lost its regular-season opener, 4-1, on the road Saturday against No. 5 Elmira College at the Murray Athletic Center.  Sophomore standout Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) put home UC's only score of the afternoon early in the first period.

UC falls to 0-1 overall and in ECAC West play while Elmira moves its overall record to 1-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference action.  The teams turn around to face-off Sunday against each other in Utica, NY at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.  The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.

Reed found the back of the net, just 2:25 into the game, off a pass from senior Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.  UC would fend off the top ranked host for over 16 minutes before allowing a power-play score with just under two minutes left in the first 20 minutes.  Soaring Eagle Brooke Wilgosh tied the contest on the man-up play off dishes from Ashton Hogan and Ashley Ryan.

The squads battled throughout the next 24+ minutes of scoreless action before the reigning national champs opened up the flood gates with three goals in the third.  The Soaring Eagle offense woke up at the start of the final period with back-to-back even-strength scores just .28 apart at 2:23 and 2:51 to cushion a 3-1 advantage.  EC would add an insurance goal at 13:42 to cap the afternoon scoring and the victory.

Senior goalie Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 29 shots while allowing four scores whereas Soaring Eagle netminder Lisa Marshall recorded 31 saves and the win.
