Elmira 5, Utica 0 - Women's Hockey Final

Plattsburgh, NY (3/2/13)- The Utica College women's hockey team lost to nationally ranked No. 4 Elmira College 5-0 in the semifinal of the ECAC West Conference Tournament Saturday night.  Junior Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 29 shots in net for the Pioneers.

Elmira controlled most of the play in the first period, but Utica's Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) was up to the test, stopping all 12 Soaring Eagle shots in the opening frame.  The second period was more even, as both teams traded scoring chances, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.

The Soaring Eagles struck fist at 18:14 of the third period as Tanis Lamoureux netted her ninth of the year.  Lamoureux gathered a puck deep in the UC zone, skated towards the front of the net, and was able to slide one passed Hamel.  Ashley Ryan assisted on the tally. The Soaring Eagles struck again at 10:59 as Caitlin Metcalf netted her 10th of the year, assisted by Samantha Curk and Brooke Wilgosh.  Just one minute later, Erin Watson was able to knock in a rebound for her sixth tally of the season.  Madison Johnston assisted on the goal. Ashton Hogan extended the lead with an unassisted tally at 16:05 and Ryan capped off the scoring at 19:04, unassisted.

Lauren Sullivan made 19 saves in the win. The Soaring Eagles will take on top seeded and nationally ranked No. 1 Plattsburgh State in the championship Sunday at 3 p.m.

Utica finishes the season 16-9-2 overall and made its 11th post season appearance in the program's 12-year history.  UC will graduate five seniors including Mary Fusco (Enfield, CT/Salve Regina University), Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)), Meghan Willett (Worcester, MA/Cushing Academy), Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride), Lindsay Norton (Eden, NY/Buffalo Bisons), and Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro)
