Utica College 23, Houghton 1 - Men's Lacrosse Final
Houghton, NY (4/10/2013) - The Utica College men's lacrosse team earned its most lopsided victory of the season Wednesday night by defeating host Houghton College 23-1. UC improved to 7-3 overall headed into a key showdown with conference foe and nationally-ranked No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday (1 p.m.) in Hoboken, N.J. Utica now needs just one more win to tie the school-record for wins in a single season (also tied the school-record with eight wins last year).
The Pioneers' 22 goal victory tied the third largest margin of victory in program-history and 23 goals is the most UC has scored in a single game since defeating Wells College 23-0 on March 25, 2009
UC scored at least four goals in each quarter and earned a 14-1 lead by the halftime intermission. The second half was delayed due to thunderstorms, but it did not seem to shake the Pioneers as they kept the momentum rolling en route to a 22 goal victory.

TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) and
Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) led the way with three goals apiece, while
Jeff Pierce (Clinton, NY/Clinton),
Sean Behan (Dewitt, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt),
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy),
Andrew Jamieson (Six Nations, ON/Hagersville) and
Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School) each recorded two goals. Jacobs also added two assists. Two goals is a new career-best for Pierce, and the two goals for Behan were the first of his collegiate career.
Fred Del Genio (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and
Josh Sommers (Singerlands, NY/Guilderland) each netted on goal and added one assist,
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) chipped in with one goal and two assists for UC.
Brandon Souza (Watervliet, NY/Shaker),
Steve Dowd (Cohoes, NY/Shaker),
Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) and
David Craig (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) each chipped in with a goal for the Pioneers. Craig added a team-high six ground balls.
Cory Spisak (Lisle, NY/Tompkins Cortland CC) stopped five shots and earned his first victory in just his second appearance in net for the Pioneers.
This was the first meeting all-time between the Pioneers and the Highlanders, as Houghton is currently a provisional member of the Empire 8 Conference (does not count as a conference game).
The Pioneers are now 4-1 on the road this season headed into Saturday's matchup at Stevens.
