Utica, NY (January 11, 2014) – The Utica College women's hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, and tied the game at 2-2 late in the third period, but the Pioneers could not complete the comeback as nationally-ranked No. 4 Norwich University skated to a 4-2 victory at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Saturday afternoon. The Cadets netted two goals in the final 4:22 of the contest to earn the victory.
Utica snapped an eight game winning streak and the Pioneers record now stands at 8-3 overall on the season. Norwich snapped a two game slide and moved its record to 10-3 on the season.
The Pioneers were led by a goal each from All-American
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and junior defender Nicole Kiefer. Myers extended her scoring streak to 11 games and she now has 19 points this season (11 goals, eight assists).
Utica opened up a 1-0 lead behind Myers' 11th tally of the season at the 11:10 marker of the first period.
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) and
Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) were each credited with an assist on the game's opening goal. The Pioneers clung to the 1-0 advantage until the 3:37 ledger of the contest when the Cadets evened the score as senior forward Tori Charron registered her 14th tally of the season.
The scored remained tied at 1-1 until Norwich's Kaycie Anderson registered her third goal of the season to put the visitors on top, 2-1, 5:06 into the third period of play.
The Pioneers would not go down without a fight, and Kieffer knotted the score at 2-2 with 5:46 remaining in regulation, off an assist from
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School), to make the game interesting. Unfortunately for the Pioneers just 1:24 later Norwich's Emily McKinnon posted what proved to be the game-winner when she slipped a goal past Utica's
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) to give the Cadets the 3-2 lead. Charron was credit with the assist for the Cadets, her eighth helper of the season.
Norwich went on to tally an empty netter with 1:15 left in the contest to seal the victory. Charron punched the final goal in for Norwich, giving her 14 on the year.

Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 25 shots in net for the Pioneers, while freshman Céleste Robert made 26 saves in her collegiate debut for Norwich.
The Cadets took advantage of their power-play opportunities, going 2-for-3 with a player advantage. It was an evenly matched contest, as the Pioneers were edged in the shot column by just one, 29-28.
The Pioneers turn right back around and hope to get back on track Sunday as they take on visiting Manhattanville College at the Aud at 4 p.m.
