Box Score Pittsburgh, PA (1/19/14)- For the second day in a row, the Utica College women's hockey team erased a one-goal deficit to defeat Chatham University Sunday afternoon at the Roy McKnight Hockey Center, this time topping the Cougars 3-2. With the sweep this weekend, the Pioneers are now 6-2 in the ECAC West Conference, and temporarily jump Oswego State to move into a tie with nationally ranked No. 3 Elmira College for second place in the conference standings.
Sophomore
Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) got things started in the first period with her sixth of the year, assisted by
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and
Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire). After falling down 2-1 in the second period, Myers netted her team-leading 13th goal of the season to tie the game with under two minutes remaining in the period. Schnepp and
Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) assisted on the play.
The Pioneers took the lead for good just 34 seconds into the third period as senior
Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks) netted her fifth tally of the year, assisted by classmate
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride). That was all the Pioneers needed as
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) shut the door the rest of the way. Hamel finished with 14 saves, while her counterpart, Megan Buchanen has 41 saves.
Utica (11-3) returns home next weekend to host ECAC West frontrunner and nationally ranked No. 1 Plattsburgh State. Game times are set for 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
