Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten in E8 Play; Pioneers Top Stevens 4-1

Utica, NY (10/12/14)- Four different players scored on the day as the Utica College field hockey team defeated Empire 8 rival Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

Utica improves to 12-1 on the year and 6-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.  The Pioneers move their program-best winning streak to ten games and remain unbeaten at home.  UC will have almost a full week off before traveling to Washington, PA next Saturday for a conference match up against Washington & Jefferson College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

After nearly 20 full minutes of scoreless action, senior Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) broke the deadlock with her Empire 8 record 28th goal of the year.  Utica added an insurance tally in the final minute of the first half as junior Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) fired a low shot inside the left post off a penalty corner from Nikki Kieffer (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy)

UC carried its momentum into the second half as senior Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) tallied her ninth of the year off a feed from classmate Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High).  Senior Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) capped off the scoring for Utica with just over five minutes remaining as she found the back of the net for her eighth of the year.  The Ducks were able to spoil Utica's shutout hopes as Stevens was awarded a penalty corner as time expired.  The ball bounced around in front of the net before Dailyn Brook was able to bat it out of the air and into the cage.

Freshman Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) made seven saves in her first collegiate start, while her counterpart, Emily Stukenborg made 17 saves in the loss.  Stevens drops to 6-9 on the year and 3-3 in the conference.
