Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) registered her second career hat trick to help lift the Utica College women's hockey team over SUNY Cortland, 5-2, in ECAC West Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the ECAC West Conference. The Red Dragons fall to 2-6 on the year and 1-4 in the conference. The teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
After a scoreless first period, Utica used two goals in 24 seconds to go up 2-0. Reed netted her sixth of the year at 4:24 of the second, assisted by seniors
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) and
Samantha Pucci (Pearl River, NY/Connecticut Polar Bears). The next shift,
Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) found the back of the net for her first of the season, off assists from
Victoria Pelton (Sterling Heights, MI/Belle Tire) and
Nikki Kieffer (Rome, NY/Lysander Lightning). The Pioneers were not done however, as
Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) netted her second short handed tally of the season at 18:34 to send UC into the locker room with a 3-0 lead headed into the third period.
Reed added two more power play tallies in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory. Kieffer finished with three assists, while Steele-Norton had two and
Janessa Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Canadian International Hockey Academy) added her third helper of the season.
Sophomore
Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) made 19 saves for her second win of the year, while her counterpart, Deanna Meunier made 20 saves in the loss. Utica was 2-for-6 on the power play, while holding the home team scoreless on six opportunities with the man advantage.
