UC Set to Host Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday

UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica College men's lacrosse game will host SUNY Canton on Saturday in a Breast Cancer Awareness game that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY: For the Breast Cancer Awareness game, UC will wear pink warm-ups and the Pioneers will be accepting donations as fans enter the stadium … All proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society.

LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers are currently on a four game winning streak after taking down Oswego on Wednesday…  They used a strong second half to down the Lakers 12-6 … They were guided by career days from Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) and Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) … Stevenson collected a career-high five points (three goals, two assists) while Finnegan added a career-high four goals and one assist … Goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) collected six saves and picked up his fifth win of the season. 

SO FAR: So far this season the Pioneers have a record of 5-2… This includes a 1-0 record in the Empire 8 Conference… They have been hot lately as they have picked up four straight wins following their 11-6 loss to Hamilton College in the annual Contineer Cup back on March 11… During the four game win streak they have outscored their opponents 32-18 and haven't allowed more than six goals in the four contests … UC's only two losses came at the hands of teams that were receiving votes in the USILA National Poll (Hamilton, St. Lawrence).

HOT START: UC has started the season with a 5-2 record four other times in program-history … Utica looks to start the season 6-2 for the first-time in program-history on Saturday … UC has won four straight games four other times in program-history (2013, 2004, 2003, 2000) … The Pioneers will look to win five straight for the first time in program-history when they host Canton.

TIGHT DEFENSE: The Pioneers currently lead the conference in goals against average as they are allowing 6.00 goals per game… Utica also ranks second in the conference with an average of 9.71 caused turnovers per game… Senior defender Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) currently leads the team with 34 groundballs and 17 turnovers caused … Matt Werkmeister (Chaska, MN/Chaska) and Sean Flanagan (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each have 11 caused turnovers for the UC defense.

BETWEEN THE PIPES: Senior goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) has been solid in goal for the Pioneers… He has picked up all five of the team's wins and has a total of 55 saves on the season… He ranks fifth in the conference with a goals against average of 6.17 and fourth in the conference with a saves percentage of .585.

A MAN OF MANY TALENTS: UC is led offensively by senior Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge)… He leads the team in goals and points with 12 and 16, respectively… He is also second on the team with 23 groundballs and has posted a .500 win percentage in the face-off circle… 12 goals in a single season is a new career-high for Stevenson.

OFFENSIVE CONTRIBUTORS: Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip), Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder), and Patrick Mulligan (Commack, NY/Commack) all have at least 10 points for the Pioneers so far this season and Finnegan leads all Pioneers with eight assists … Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) ranks second on the team with nine goals this season and Matthew Miller (Geneva, NY/Geneva) has chipped in with seven goals and one assist.

THIRD QUARTER DOMINANCE: UC has outscored its opponents 16-4 in the third quarter so far this season … Conversely, UC hopes to pick up the pace in the fourth quarter, as the Pioneers have been outscored 19-13 in the final 15 minutes of the game … Ball security has keyed the Pioneers third quarter success as they have turned the ball over just 29 times in the third quarter so far this season.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Pioneers are currently 3-0 on the road this season … UC will look to improve upon its 2-2 record at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Saturday. 

MEET THE ROOS: SUNY Canton is currently 0-5 on the season… Two of their losses have come to teams that Utica has defeated (Morrisville, SUNY Poly)… They are led offensively by senior Ryan Cardiff (eight goals, four assists) and junior Chris Gamble (eight goals, two assists)… Cardiff and Gamble are the only SUNY Canton players with more than 10 points on the season.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following Saturday's home contest, the Pioneers will hit the road for back-to-back away games… They will first head to Nazareth College for an Empire 8 contest on Wednesday… They will then pack up and head to Pomona, NJ to take on Richard Stockton in non-conference action on Saturday.
