KEUKA PARK, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team fell on the road to Keuka 9-8, in non-conference action on Wednesday. The Pioneers are now 1-5 on the season while the Wolfpack improves to 3-1. Utica begins Empire 8 Conference play on the road Saturday against Ithaca.
Utica had five different players with at least one goal and four different players with two or more points. Freshman
Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the team with five points off of a game high four goals and one assist.
Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) had three points off of one goal and two assists.
Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) and
Tyler Nicolaus (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each had two points off of one goal and one assist while
Craig DiSanto (Montebello, NY/Suffern) added a goal.
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) had his fifth game this season with 10 or more saves, saving 10 shots on the day.
Matt Beebe led Keuka with five points off of two goals and three assist while Tyler Skowronski had four points off of one goal and three assists. Kyle Andrake made seven saves in the net for the Wolfpack.
Keuka struck twice in the first six minutes of play to take a 2-0 lead. DiSanto put Utica on the board with his first collegiate goal with 5:37 left to play. The Wolfpack added two more at the 4:28 and 4:21 mark in the first to make it 4-1. Castiglia scored off of a pass from Nicolaus to bring UC back to within two with 3:27 left to play in the first quarter. Keuka capped off the scoring in the first expanding the lead to three with 31 seconds left.
The Pioneers scored the only goals in the second to make it 5-4. Castiglia scored both goals while House got both assists. In the third Utica tied it at five off of a goal by Finnegan before Keuka netted two straight to expand the lead to two. Utica brought it within one when House scored with 4:31 in the third.
The Wolfpack took an 8-6 lead in the fourth before Utica tied it with two unanswered goals by Castiglia and Nicolaus. With five seconds left in the game Keuka secured the 9-8 victory on a Dustin Springer goal.
Utica had a 10-to-7 save advantage and cleared the ball 23-0f-28 attempts. Nicolaus added a team high four caused turnovers and a team high four ground balls to his two point night.
Matt Werkmeister (Chaska, MN/Chaska) also had four caused turnovers and added three groundballs in the game.
