Baseball Downs SUNY Canton in Conference Action

CANTON, NY – The Utica College baseball team beat Empire 8 Conference opponent SUNY Canton 9-8 on Sunday. Utica ends the weekend 2-1 and improved to 8-18 overall and 6-9 in the conference. The Kangaroos fell to 10-21 overall with a 4-11 conference record. The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday when they host conference opponent Elmira College when they are slated to finish a previously halted game that ended in the sixth inning and then immediately following The Pioneers and Soaring Eagles will play one more nine inning game. The games are set to start at 2 p.m.
 
JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills), Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), and Adam Pexton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each had two RBIs and one run scored as they led the Utica offense. William Winsman (Palatine Bridge, NY/Canajoharie) got the start on the mound and went six innings giving up 11 hits and six runs (five earned) while earning the win. Gavin McCann (Highland, NY/Highland) pitched the final three innings giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two and earning the save.
 
Eight different players had an RBI for SUNY Canton while Christian Nazario-Cruz led the team with one RBI and two runs scored. Khalil Bratton started on the mound for the Kangaroos and pitched two innings giving up seven hits and seven runs (five earned) while striking out five. Chris Lee pitched the next four innings giving up four hits and two earned runs while Jake St. Mary pitched the final three innings and only gave up two hits and struck out one.
 
Utica took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before SUNY Canton used the bottom half of the second inning to add three runs to make it a 3-1 lead for the Kangaroos. The Pioneers took the lead for good in the top half of the third inning when the offense exploded for eight runs to make it 9-3. Canton shut Utica's offense down the rest of the way but the damage had been done. The Kangaroos picked up a run in the bottom of the third to make it 9-4. SUNY Canton scored a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth inning to make it a 9-6 game. UC gave up two runs in the eighth but held on for the victory.
