Second Half Surge Propels UC Past Elmira in Season Finale

Box Score Utica, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team capped its 2016 campaign with a 13-4 victory over visiting Elmira College in Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Six different players scored at least two points for the Pioneers.

Freshman Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the way once again with four points on three goals and one assist.  Castiglia's 40 goals this season rank sixth on the College's all-time single season list.  Senior Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) capped his final season with three assists in the contest.  Finnegan's 28 assists this season are tied for third on the College's all-time single season list and his 41 career assists are tied for sixth on the College's career list.

Senior goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) made 15 saves on the day as he became just the third goalie in program-history to record over 500 career saves.  He capped his career with 510 saves (third all-time) and his 149 saves this season are a new career-high and rank seventh on the College's single season list.  His 16 career wins are also good enough for second on the College's all-time wins list.

It was a special moment for the Pioneers as time winded down on the clock and senior Mike Wells (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) netted his first collegiate goal in the final moments of his last collegiate game (21 seconds left on the game clock) to give Utica the nine goal victory.

Utica finished its season with two consecutive wins and a 4-11 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the highly competitive Empire 8 Conference. Elmira capped its season with a 4-9 overall record and a 1-7 ledger in conference play.

The Pioneers opened up a 2-0 lead in the first 10:48 of the contest after senior Brandon Souza (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) and Mitch Sobilo (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each registered a first quarter goal.  Tyler Nicolaus (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) assisted on Souza's second goal of the season. Elmira added a goal of its own before the end of the first quarter to make it a 2-1 game.

The Soaring Eagles outscored UC 2-1 in the second quarter to knot the score at 3-3 headed into the half.  UC's second quarter goal was netted by sophomore Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) and assisted by Patrick Mulligan (Commack, NY/Commack)

The second half was all Utica as the Pioneers outscored the visitors 10-1 in the 30 minute stretch.  The second half surge included seven consecutive goals by the Pioneers.  Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) began the charge with his 14th goal of the season, assisted by Finnegan just 2:06 into the quarter, to give Utica a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.  Xavier Perron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Le Triolet) then added this fourth goal of the season before House netted his second of the game to give UC a 6-3 lead with 3:31 to go in the third.

Castiglia then rattled off three consecutive goals as the Pioneers took a commanding 9-3 lead with 14:13 left in regulation. Bob Zattola (Somers, NY/Somers) added two fourth quarter goals, while Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) also registered his career-high 22nd goal of the season.
