Utica, NY – The Utica College men's and women's swim & dive team will be hosting Alfred University and Wells College on Friday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Pioneers hosted Cazenovia College in their last meet, as the men won 77-59 and the women won 140-82. Sam Bensin, Chris Halsey, Tommy Carlson, and Aaron Gudrian set a new pool record in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:56.26. For the women,
Phoebe King (New Bedford, MA/GNB Voc Tech),
Alyson Baribault (Plantsville, CT/Southington),
Grace Gallentine (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes), and
Daniela Hannah (Dalton, GA/Northwest Whitfield) also set a new pool record in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:54.66. The men improved their record to 5-3 while the women are now 5-4.
Top Swimmers: The men's swim team is led by Chris Halsey and Tim Tellekamp. So far this season, these two swimmers have earned 11 first place finishes each. Halsey and Tellekamp consistently win events at the team's meets and will look to do more of that moving forward.
Phoebe King (New Bedford, MA/GNB Voc Tech) is the top performer on the women's team, as she has registered 10 first place finishes throughout the season. Teammate
Alyson Baribault (Plantsville, CT/Southington) has also done well this year earning nine event wins so far.
Scouting Alfred: The Alfred University men's swim and dive team currently holds a record of 1-4, while the women's team is 2-4. Alec Toth is the top swimmer for the men's team and Megan Steen is the leading performer for the women. In the team's dual meet victory over the University of Pittsburg at Bradford, Toth earned first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.13) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.08). Steen also placed first in two events, earning wins in the 200-yard IM (2:28.85) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.71). The men defeated Pitt-Bradford 117-88 and the women won as well with a score of 95-54.
Against Alfred: Neither the men's or women's team have been able to defeat Alfred University over the past 10 years. In last year's meet the men lost 153-78 and the women lost 133-79. At the meet, King earned a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle event (2:08.52) for the women. Tellekamp was the top swimmer for the men on the day as he won both the 100-yard freestyle (51.03) and 200-yard freestyle (1:51.75).
Wells College Matchup: This will be the second meeting this season between the Pioneers and Wells College. Both the men and women's teams were victorious over Wells, with scores of 48-40 and 53-35 respectively (11/5/16). Aaron Gudrian earned first place in the men's 1,000-yard freestyle event with a time of 11:35.31.
Alyson Baribault (Plantsville, CT/Southington) won two events for the women, earning first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:22.58) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.29). UC dominated the majority of the events for both the men and women and hope to do the same in this next meet.
Looking Ahead: The Utica College men and women swim and dive team will be at home once again for its next meet on January 21
st. The Pioneers will be playing host to Nazareth College, as the competitions will begin at 1 p.m.
