Canton, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Pioneers topped host SUNY Canton 14-8 in non-conference action Saturday. Utica's
Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) had another huge day as he posted eight points on four goals and four assists to pace the Pioneers to their sixth win in their last seven contests. House remains the team-leader this season with 49 points (29 goals, 20 assists).
Utica's record moved to 8-4 overall and they remain at 2-2 in Empire 8 play headed into a key conference tilt at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
Utica's
Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) posted three goals and added one assist to go along with four ground balls, while
Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic),
Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) and
Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each added three points.
Rusty Dessert (Islip, NY/Islip) caused four turnovers and picked up five ground balls on the defensive end for UC, while
Parker Smith (Dexter, NY/General Brown) and
Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) combined to stop 15 shots in net for the Pioneers.
Yelich netted two of the Pioneers' first four goals to help UC burst out to a 4-0 lead. Utica netted six of its eight first quarter goals in the final 5:39 of the first quarter to earn the 8-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.
Canton outscored Utica 3-2 in the second quarter, but the Pioneers held a convincing 10-3 lead as the halftime horn sounded.
Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) scored two of the Pioneers' three second quarter goals.
Canton rallied to make the score 11-7 with 13:53 left in the fourth quarter, but the Pioneers closed the door with three of the game's final four goals to earn the six goal victory.
Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) and
Mitch Sobilo (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each added one goal for Utica, while
Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) picked up one assist.
Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) posted seven ground balls, while
Nick Finnegan (Bayshore, NY/Islip) added a team-best eight ground balls and won 14-of-23 face-offs on the afternoon. Giachinta added three caused turnovers and
Tyler Nicolaus (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) picked up four ground balls.
Canton (3-7) was led by five points from Trenton Yule on the afternoon, while Kody Kocsis made 25 saves in the loss for the Roos.
