UC Swim & Dive Returns to Action

Utica, NY – The Utica College women and men swim and dive teams return to the pool, as they travel to Alfred University on Friday and then to Erie Community College on Saturday. Friday's meet is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., while Saturday's competition starts at 1 p.m.
 
Last Time Out: The Pioneers last competed against Cazenovia, back on December 1, 2017. The women won by a score of 117-105, while the men emerged with a 124-27 victory. Grace Gallentine (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) secured two first place finishes for the women's team, winning the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. In the 100-yard backstroke race, Meagan Stanton (Chemung, NY/Waverly) was able to place first for UC.

Daniel Angotti placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, while teammate Keihin Lee earned first during the 200-yard freestyle event. John Blashke and Michael Leyburn both came in first place individually, in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke respectively.
 
Top Swimmers: On the women's side, senior Phoebe King (New Bedford, MA/GNB Voc Tech) is having consistent success from meet to meet. At the last meet in Cazenovia, King set a new pool-record time of 2:02.06 during her first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle event. She then went on to place first in the 500-yard freestyle, and as a member of 400-yard medley relay team.

TJ Tellekamp has been solid all season for Utica and demonstrated that in the last meet against Cazenovia. Tellekamp placed first in the 100-yard IM, swimming a new pool-record time of 57.28. He then proceeded to breaking another Cazenovia pool-record, with a first place time of 49.06 in the 100-yard freestyle event. TJ capped his day off as a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
 
Scouting Alfred: For the women, Lauren Serotta earned a 20th place finish in the 200-yard backstroke race with a time of 2:16.47. Clocking in at 1:09.93, Elizabeth Finney was able to place 21st in the 100-yard IM event.

The men's team placed 10th at the Ithaca College Invitational, the last time out, while the women came in 11th place. Noah Koltenuk came in eighth place in the 1,650-yard freestyle event, with a time of 16:50.54 at the meet. The men's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Joseph Lawrence, Andy Edmister, Geno Darin, and Alec Toth swam a time of 3:18.13 on the way to a ninth place finish.
 
ECC Long Course Invite: On Saturday the Pioneers will be off to Buffalo, NY. The team will be competing at the Erie Community College Long Course Invitational. The last meet ECC participated in was at the Herkimer College Fall Invite on November 11th, 2017. Both the women and men earned first place, putting up scores of 276 and 321 respectively. Allie DeBiase placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. DeBiase also won the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 6:01.22. Tabby Smith took home first place as an individual in the 50-yard freestyle, as well as being on the first place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.

For the men, Matt Purcell earned first place finishes in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Brad Zifra won two events as well, coming in first place during the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke.
 
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers are on the road again on January 20th, as they compete against Nazareth College. This meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
