Women's Hockey Looks to Get Back on Track Against William Smith

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team looks to get back on track this weekend with a home-and-home series against William Smith College.  The teams will face off at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Geneva before returning to Utica on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match up.

LAST TIME OUT: Utica dropped a pair of UCHC games to nationally ranked No. 2 Elmira College last weekend… Elmira took the first game 5-0, and came away with a hard fought 5-2 win in the series finale… Utica had a much stronger showing on Saturday, trailing the Soaring Eagles just 3-2 entering the third period before the visitors netted an insurance goal and added an empty netter to seal the victory… Senior Meghan Power (Windsor, Ontario/Southwest Wildcats) and Veronique Lortie (Chambly, Quebec/Berkshire School) scored for Utica, while Danielle Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Balmoral Hall), Olivia Hirschy (Fort Wayne, IN/Culver Academies), Taylor Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks), and Jennifer Arts (Lakeside, Ontario/London Devilettes) each had one assist.

A LOOK AT THE CONFERENCE: Utica is currently in fifth place in the conference standings, just two points behind Manhattanville College… 10 of Utica's 11 remaining games are UCHC conference contests, including six games against teams who are currently below the Pioneers in the standings, as well as a series against Manhattanville.

GOING GOLD ALL YEAR LONG: All season long, the Pioneers will wear special edition gold ribbon uniforms to raise awareness for childhood cancer… The jerseys are currently being auctioned off online (HERE) and bidding can be done in person at any home game this year… The person with the winning bid will be invited to the Pioneers' end of season banquet, where they will be given their jersey from the player who wore it all season… Additionally, Utica's game against Morrisville State on Dec. 9 served as the Pioneers' 6th annual gold ribbon game for childhood cancer awareness… All money raised at the event and through the jersey auction will be donated to the family of a local child who is battling cancer… The Pioneers have raised over $22,000 for the cause over the last five years.

THEY'VE GOT THE POWER: Senior Meghan Power (Windsor, Ontario/Southwest Wildcats) leads the team with 11 points and eight assists… Her goal against Elmira on Saturday marked the 50th point of her career…. Eight of her 11 points have come in UCHC Conference games.

HELPING OUT: Junior Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) and sophomore Rebecca Brown (Steamboat Springs, CO/Norwich University) are tied for second on the team with 10 points each… Utica is 4-0 when both Brown and Dohner record at least one point.

SCOUTING WILLIAM SMITH: The Herons are 10-3-3 overall and are unbeaten in the UCHC with a 6-0-2 mark in league play… William Smith is coming off a sweep over Lebanon Valley last weekend… 10 Players have at least 10 points on the season, led by Krista Federow, who has eight goals and 15 assists… Maggie Salmon holds a .945 save percentage and 1.51 goals against average.

AGAINST THE HERONS: Utica is 6-0 all-time against William Smith, with four victories coming by shutout… Last year, UC came away with a 1-0 win on the road, and a 4-0 ledger at home to complete the series sweep… Veonique Lortie had two goals on the weekend, while Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) had one goal and one assist… Olivia Hirschy (Fort Wayne, IN/Culver Academies) also scored, and Meghan Power (Windsor, Ontario/Southwest Wildcats) and Kayla Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks) each had one assist.

LOOKING AHEAD: Utica will embark on a five-game road trip beginning next weekend with a UCHC series at Stevenson University… Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
