The Series Against King's: The Pioneers are set to take on their fifth matchup all-time against King's College, and Utica has won all four games to date against the Monarchs. Utica has outscored King's College by a 24-0 margin in those games. The Pioneers won by scores of 4-0 and 6-0 in games played at King's last season. Becky Brown finished that weekend with two goals and an assist.
The Series Against Wilkes: The Pioneers and Colonels are due to meet for a third time, and this will be their first United Collegiate Hockey Conference meeting. The Colonels were a provisional UCHC member last season, which meant none of their games against UCHC teams counted in the conference standings. Utica swept the Colonels in a home-and-home, with an 8-0 win in Wilkes-Barre, followed by a 3-0 win in Utica. Graduated senior Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) led the way for Utica in the 8-0 win with a four goal performance. Caley Susitti (Hartland, WI/Milwaukee Jr. Admirals) and Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) were the two returners to score in the 3-0 home win.
Last Time Out: The Pioneers got their first win of the season on Tuesday defeating Nazareth College by a final score of 4-1. Utica struck first by scoring two goals in the first period, and were able to tack on two more insurance goals throughout the game to secure the win. All four goals in the contest came from freshmen as Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) scored twice, and Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) and Abby Lillis (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons) each netted a goal apiece. Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) added two assists in the game, while Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) stopped 43 of 44 shots to earn the win.
Keeping A Running Count: The Pioneers are averaging 2.50 goals per game, and are conceding 3.50 goals per contest.
On The Road Again: From the start of last season to now, the Pioneers are 11-6 in road contests. They have outscored opponents on the road 61-30 in that time.
Silent Special Teams: All of the goals in Utica's two games this season have come at even strength. The Pioneers are among the national leaders with a perfect 7-for-7 start on the penalty kill, but the Utica power play also has not scored in six opportunities.
Doing The Splits: Utica has split the time in goal between goaltenders Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) and Savannah Gutierrez (Huntington Beach, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) so far this season, with each player getting one start apiece. Reilly turned in a 43 save performance in helping Utica to a 4-1 win over Nazareth. She has a career record of 18-10-2, and a career goals allowed average of 1.76. Gutierrez was Utica's opening night starter as a sophomore, and made 28 saves in a loss to Morrisville. She has a career record of 1-1-1 in two starts.
Rookie Rumblings: Through two games, all of the team's goals have been scored by freshmen exclusively. Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) has scored twice, while Abby Lillis (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons), Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School), and Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, MI/Little Caesars) have each recorded one goal apiece. Seven freshmen have dressed in a game for the Pioneers so far this season.Â
Super Santullo: Sophomore forward Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) leads the team with two assists so far this season. She has 25 career points in just 28 career games at the outset of her second season in blue and orange.
Taking One For The Team: Senior defender Kyra Borsoi (Brossard, Quebec/Holderness) leads the team with three blocked shots this season. She blocked a pair of shots in helping Utica to a 4-1 win over Nazareth earlier this week.
Welcome Back, Ricki: Forward Ricki Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) made her return to the lineup in the game against Nazareth earlier this week. She missed the season opener due to the success of the Utica College field hockey team, which qualified for the Empire 8 tournament for a second time in three years. Haab was recently named a first team All-Conference selection by the Empire 8 in field hockey.
Oh Captain, My Captain: The Pioneers have recently announced the appointment of
Olivia Hirschy (Fort Wayne, IN/Culver Academies) as the team's 2019-20 captain. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native is set to play the 70th game of her career on Friday, and has 27 goals in her career to lead all active players at Utica.
Kyra Borsoi (Brossard, Quebec/Holderness),
Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy), and Becky Brown were selected as the alternate captains for the 2019-20 season.
Scouting King's College: King's College is 0-2 to start the season under interim head coach Brice Baricevic. The Monarchs are led by returning athletes Gracen Mahoney and Maggie Gould, who each had four goals last season. Josée Aitken led the team with four assists last season, and 11 athletes recorded at least one point on the year. Goaltender Emma Zeveney is the UCHC North Goaltender of the Week presently.Â
Scouting Wilkes: Wilkes University is 0-2 to begin their second year under head coach Earl Utter. The team lost 12-0 to Elmira, before losing 4-1 to William Smith. Freshman Andrea Delvecchio has the team's lone goal this season. Sophomores Kendall Castro and Shauna Tubbs are the active career leaders in goals for the Colonels with four apiece.Â
What's Next: The Pioneers will return home for one of their biggest conference weekends of the year. The Pioneers will play UCHC North rival William Smith on Friday, November 22nd, before turning around to meet Elmira College on Saturday, November 23rd. Friday's game is set for 3:30 p.m., while the Saturday contest will begin at 2 p.m.
